Weekend brings store hold-up; downtown fire

Officers responded to an alleged armed robbery Friday afternoon at Capitol Centre Foods, 111 N. Broom St.

According to a Madison Police Department news release, the suspect entered the store shortly before 8:50 p.m., giving a clerk a note indicating that he had a gun. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

As of Sunday, police said, the suspect was not yet arrested.

He is described as a white male, age unknown, 5'10\, with a thin build. He was wearing a red hat and a gray shirt.

In an unrelated incident, firefighters fought a blaze early Saturday morning in the 600 block of State Street. The fire, which began at 615 and 613 State St., left Toyko Express, 617 State St., closed for business as of Sunday evening.

MFD Division Chief Joe Aldworth said firefighters responded in the early morning hours after smoke was seen inside of State Street Brats, 603 State St. Firefighters soon determined that the smoke was coming through the walls of a neighboring building. Front windows at Toyko Express and Madison Optimetric Center, 615 State St., were broken to allow interior access.

Aldworth said damage to the buildings, caused mainly by smoke, was minimal. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday.
