Feingold and McCain begin finance reform road tour in Arkansas

Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and John McCain, R-Ariz., kicked off a nationwide series of events to advocate campaign finance reform Monday in Little Rock, Ark.

Feingold and McCain held a town hall meeting with an audience of several hundred people.

The event--and others like it scheduled in the next few weeks--are targeted at U.S. senators who have not yet taken a firm position on campaign finance reform.

The events urge senators to support the McCain-Feingold bill, known officially as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2001. It aims to ban \soft money,"" or unlimited political contributions made to political parties.

Monday's targeted senator, Sen. Tim Hutchinson, R-Ark., said he would not support the bill, telling CNN it would restrict free speech.

Similar town hall events are being planned in Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Louisiana and Oregon.
