Letters & Science's lease in Bookstore gets approval

UW-Madison’s College of Letters & Science Career Initiative program received approval last Friday to move into the third floor of the University Bookstore.

“This’ll significantly increase the footprint of the Career Initiative,” said Chris Bruhn, director of facilities at the College of Letters & Science.

Currently, the Career Initiative is located at the Middleton Building on Linden Drive. According to the Board of Regents meeting report, the move will provide 7,200 square feet of office space to the program.

Due to the lack of campus space, the college proposed to take over the new lease in the University Bookstore.

“They simply have outgrown [the Middleton Building] because the college has made an investment in the Career Initiative to try and bolster its mission,” Bruhn said.

Besides increased office space, the Career Initiative will have new learning and communications technologies, according to the report. The new space will also have the benefit of nearby parking for recruiters.

“It will increase traffic, obviously, because it’s a very visible location. Students know where the Bookstore is and recruiters come to the Career Initiative office to meet with students and interview them,” Bruhn said. “There will be parking for recruiters, and hopefully it will really be a win-win situation for students and for the Career Initiative.”

The next phase for the program is figuring out how the office space will be arranged.

It will move into the third floor of the University Bookstore next January and plan to open sometime next summer.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity for the Career Initiative,” Bruhn said. “It’ll be a lot of work from here until next summer, but we think it’ll raise the visibility of the Career Initiative and really improve the services provided to Letters and Science students who utilize their services.”
