It is rare that the week featuring Wisconsin vs. Minnesota arrives and the talk of historical impact in the Big Ten does not center around Paul Bunyan’s axe. That is exactly the case this year, as the devastating facts continue to surface in State College, Penn., and major announcements keep coming from Penn State University.

The Badgers beat the tournament host Michigan in Ann Arbor, 2-0 on Wednesday to move to the second round of the Big Ten Tournament where they will take on Penn State, who won their first Big Ten game this season in an upset over second seeded Ohio State.
Excitement is already high with the 2011-'12 Wisconsin men’s basketball season just a few short days away. Looking further ahead, anticipation is building for next season with the Badgers’ signing of the 6 foot 8 inch Sheboygan forward Sam Dekker whom the Badgers signed Wednesday.
After a year of NCAA violations ripping through some of the nation’s preeminent college football programs, the latest scandal involving the Penn State football program takes the disgust over what happened at Ohio State and Miami to a completely different level. Penn State didn’t just violate NCAA bylaws (in fact, they probably didn’t violate those at all), they violated our nation’s laws and more importantly, the laws of human morality.
With the regular season over, crunch time has begun for the Wisconsin men’s soccer team (4-2-0 Big Ten, 9-7-2 overall) who are the number three seed in the Big Ten tournament, which starts for the Badgers Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Badgers will face the tournament host Michigan Wolverines (1-5-0, 5-13-1) in a rematch of an early October game.
While the agony of defeat may be a harsh pill to swallow, the Wisconsin football team (3-2 Big Ten, 7-2 overall) showcased its resiliency with a convincing 62-17 victory over Purdue, avenging two consecutive losses on the road. Wisconsin’s exceptional running attack was in full force as junior running back Montee Ball rushed for a career-high 223 yards and tied Brian Calhoun’s school record of 24 touchdowns in a season.
The Wisconsin men’s basketball team opened up play Saturday night when it beat UW-Stevens Point in an exhibition game, 80-54.
After salvaging a point on the road this past weekend on the road in St. Cloud, Minn., the ever-growing Wisconsin men’s hockey team (3-4-1 WCHA, 4-5-1 overall) returns home to work out the kinks and prepare for a showdown with No. 1 Minnesota (6-0, 9-1) this weekend at the Kohl Center.
The University of Wisconsin Badger volleyball team (6-8 Big Ten, 14-12 overall) made a big statement on Sunday in front of more than 4,000 fans, shocking Penn State (11-3, 18-6), the four-time defending NCAA champions. Lead by freshman Ellen Chapman's career day (18 kills, 14 digs), the Badgers beat the Nittany Lions in five sets. Fumbling slightly in a hard fought third, and falling further in the fourth, the pressure didn't seem to get to the Badgers as a 15-12 fifth set sealed the deal. Sunday's win gave Wisconsin its biggest upset since 2006, also against Penn State. Wisconsin will take on No. 23 Michigan on Friday night and Michigan State on Saturday night at the UW Field House.
This was not a statement win.
It is no secret that the Wisconsin football team prefers to play its games in Madison. But after Saturday’s 62-17 victory over Purdue (2-3 Big Ten 4-5 overall), a victory that came on the heels of two-consecutive losses on the road, it is clear that the Badgers (2-2. 7-2) are a different team inside the confines of Camp Randall Stadium.
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (3-4-1 WCHA, 4-5-1 overall) traveled to St. Cloud, Minn. this weekend, looking for its first road win of the season against St. Cloud State, but after a disappointing loss on Friday and a hard-fought tie on Saturday, the search goes on.

Through the first month of the season, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (3-3-0 WCHA, 4-4-0 overall) has surpassed the expectations many had for it coming into this year.
The No.1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team (5-1-0 WCHA, 9-1-0 overall) will play an opponent ranked outside the top-10 for the first time in five weeks this weekend. The Badgers will travel to Columbus, Ohio to challenge the Buckeyes (5-2-1, 5-2-1).
While Saturday’s spotlight will certainly be on Camp Randall and the 6-2 UW football team, Wisconsin men’s basketball kicks off their season Saturday night at the Kohl Center with an exhibition matchup against UW-Stevens Point.
