CORVALLIS, Ore.—No matter how you slice it, the Badgers’ (1-1 overall) offensive performance Saturday was one of the poorest in recent memory.
A strong performance in Wisconsin volleyball’s (8-1 overall) nine-set, three-game sweep at this weekend’s InnTowner Invitational brought more than just a team crown for senior middle blocker Mary Ording. The Carmel, Ind., native was named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the week Monday after accumulating 13 blocks over the weekend.
After two less-than-stellar offensive performances this season, the Badgers have released offensive line coach Mike Markuson, according to Tom Mulhern of the Wisconsin State Journal.
The No. 15 Wisconsin Women's Soccer Team (5-1-0 overall) was able to withstand a late surge in regulation and survived in double-overtime to beat Illinois State (3-2-2 overall), 3-2, at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon to conclude their non-conference home schedule. The Badgers have now started 5-1 for the second straight year.
I could spend the next 600 or so words talking about whatever you call what we watched Saturday afternoon (I’m told that was supposed to be football), but I’m not. We all know what happened and it is just not worth the effort.
Corvallis, Ore.—Say what you will about Wisconsin’s schedule each year, but head coach Bret Bielema entered Saturday’s game against Oregon State 25-0 in regular season, non-conference games.
The Badger women’s volleyball team (8-1 overall) kicked off their 2012 season at home this weekend with wins in nine straight sets en route to the Inn Towner Invitational title at the UW Fieldhouse. After sweeping Drake on Friday and overcoming an early first set deficit Saturday against North Dakota State, Wisconsin took the momentum early in the championship game against Milwaukee, and held on to win 25-15, 26-24, 25-23.
The Wisconsin Badgers (1-0 overall) are not concerned one bit.
The calendar may only read September, but hockey is in the air in Madison. Men’s hockey head coach Mike Eaves named his team’s captains for the upcoming season on Wednesday, and to the surprise of no one, some familiar faces will be wearing the “C” and “As” on their sweater this winter.
The Wisconsin volleyball team (5-1 overall) will return to the UW Field House this weekend for the 21st annual InnTowner Invitational.
The Wisconsin women’s golf team hits the links this weekend to start its 2012-’13 season, travelling to Charleston, S.C., for the Cougar Classic.
The 2012 opener at Camp Randall is in the books and Wisconsin football remains undefeated. While it was only a five-point victory over an FCS opponent, the Badgers won nonetheless.

Through spring practice and fall camp, wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni consistently acknowledged he had a group that lacked experience beyond redshirt junior Jared Abbrederis.
Stop me if you’ve heard this at some point during the week, but the Badger football squad didn’t exactly turn in a Picasso on Saturday against Northern Iowa.
At first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s introductory press conference in January, he said his philosophy would be to continue running “a Wisconsin offense.” This implication is well known in Badger country as a powerful rushing attack behind a big, talented offensive line. Recently, the “Wisconsin offense” also means putting up a ton of points.
A win is a win. Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema and numerous Badger players echoed this cliché following Wisconsin’s (1-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) 26-21 victory over FCS opponent Northern Iowa (0-1 overall, 0-0 Missouri Valley Conference) Saturday afternoon in the first game of the 2012 season.
Expectations can often be deceiving. For Wisconsin football (1-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) and head coach Bret Bielema, the team’s high expectations proved to be a little misleading this past weekend as the Badgers pulled out a 26-21 nail biter over Northern Iowa (0-1 overall, 0-0 Missouri Valley Conference). With many projecting the preseason No. 12 Badgers to roll to their 15th consecutive season-opening win, it took a timely fourth quarter pass deflection by redshirt junior defensive lineman Ethan Hemer on a fourth-and-one to pull out the win.
When star running back Montee Ball announced he was returning to Madison for his senior season just days after the Badgers lost the 2012 Rose Bowl, a baseline of expectation was set for the 2012-’13 campaign.
