Football: Badger backs have impressed

With spring practice now over halfway done, the Wisconsin football team is looking forward to its spring game on April 28, and, to this point, head coach Bret Bielema likes the way his team is shaping up.

Column: Increased violence in postseason not a good thing for NHL

Few would argue that the National Hockey League’s postseason isn’t one of the best spectacles in sports. Two full months of all-out, emotionally charged hockey and an uptick in the quality of play certainly makes the games fun to watch, but so far during this year’s playoffs the physical intensity has been amped up even higher.

Independent solid gold on Madison's silver screen

The 2012 Wisconsin Film Festival is finally here, and featuring more films than ever over five days, from Wednesday through Sunday. The festival is a remarkable opportunity for Madisonians to see a side of the indie film world that usually requires living in L.A. or New York, right here in our own backyard. To get your cinematic tastebuds salivating, I’ve selected the five films from this year’s lineup that have intrigued me the most:

Men's Hockey: The cost of concussions

It’s no secret that the sport of hockey has a concussion problem on its hands. From youth all the way up to professional ranks, the injury is becoming more prevalent as the sport is played at an increasingly faster and more physical pace. That is what hockey fans pay to come to the rink and watch, but at what price?

Column: When athletes cross into politics, fans don’t have to listen

A little more than a year ago, I had the chance to see a film called “Not Just A Game: Power, Politics and American Sports.” It’s a documentary co-written by Dave Zirin, a sports columnist and writer for the progressive magazine The Nation, in which Zirin takes on the conventional wisdom that sports and politics are inherently separate entities, and challenges the notion that athletes should stay away from taking political stances.

'21 Jump Street' a successful commentary on the recent past

YEAR 2005—so begins this year’s cinematic reimagining of the ’80s TV series “21 Jump Street” that launched the career of Johnny Depp. We open on metal-mouth-clad Jonah Hill donning a pair of those ridiculously, impractically baggy jeans from the turn of the (21st) century that have been all but forgotten in favor of their hipster antithesis, skinny jeans.

Making music, making brighter futures

When children start orchestra programs during fifth grade in Madison area public schools, demographics usually match those of the classrooms. However, by the time students are playing in high school, diversity in music programs is nearly nonexistent.

Football: Former Maryland QB transfers to UW

With the departure of Russell Wilson, one of the biggest questions facing the Wisconsin football team for the 2012 season was its situation under center. Consider those questions answered with Wednesday’s news that former Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien has decided to take his talents to Madison.

Men's Hockey: Schultz honored again

The postseason accolades continue to pile up for Wisconsin men’s hockey junior defenseman Justin Schultz as CollegeHockeyNews.com named the West Kelowna, British Colombia native to its 2012 All-CHN First Team Tuesday.

Winter Sounds give us chills

The longer a band takes to set up and the more instruments they have the more pretentious and difficult to relate to they will be. At least, this was what I thought before Friday night. Der Rath has hosted some interesting bands, but none that have roped me in as much as the Winter Sounds.

Women's Hockey: Title hopes dashed

DULUTH, Minn.—The Wisconsin women’s hockey team ended its drive for back-to-back national titles Sunday having played one of its best games of the season, battling back from an early deficit and keeping up in an NCAA final against Minnesota that sped along at break-neck pace.

Internet and film for the comin generation

Hipster spring break is finally over. Brightly colored lens-less glasses from the night before—a riotous combination of the culminating night of South by Southwest and the city of Austin’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day—have been traded out for oversized shades as everybody in the Austin airport sulks behind laptop screens and tall cups of coffee, disappointed that the party is over. Like kids waiting to be picked up by their parents at the end of summer camp.
