Madison Mayor Paul Soglin expressed his disappointment in the Town of Madison police department’s decision to hire former DeForest Police Chief Daniel Furseth, who resigned in August after making racist comments in a YouTube video. The video, posted to YouTube in December 2015 by a former DeForest police intern, features Furseth speaking in a stereotypically black voice while filming a group of well-dressed black men walking into a Steak and Shake restaurant.

Madison city officials and the National Weather Service warned of flash flooding as forecasts predict several days of rain.

City officials warn of flooding as forecasts show rain

Madison city officials are warning residents to keep sandbags in place as rain forecasts over the next several days raise concerns for a new round of flash flooding. City officials report both Lakes Monona and Mendota rose five inches following rainstorms Sunday and Monday, but are still down six and nine inches respectively from their highs during the August storms.

Man arrested after exposing himself to a family

The 31-year-old woman spotted the man on 600 block of East Washington Avenue around 6:30 p.m. The police identified the suspect as 58-year-old Waldemar Santiago-Rivera. They arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct while armed, felon in possession of a knife, as well as lewd, lascivious behavior and exposure.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced the upcoming budget would include increases in funds for mental health programs and opioid overdose prevention.

Dane County’s 2019 budget will include extra funds aimed at improving the county’s response to mental health and opioid-related incidents. The annual budget, which will be released in full on Oct. 1, will contains the largest increase in funding for frontline mental health services in county history, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said Thursday.

Student injured during gunfight near Lafollete High School

A gunfight near La Follette High School left one 17-year-old student injured and put the building on lockdown for the second time this week. Police responded to reports of a fight between several young men at the corner of Linda Vista Road and Turner Avenue around 10:40 a.m., Madison police said. Witnesses also told police at least one gun had been fired.

Following the recent floods, Dane County will enact over $18 million in initiatives designed to recover and prevent future disasters of the same kind.

Dane County announces $18 million flood relief program

Following weeks of historic flooding across the greater Madison area, the Dane County government announced plans for over $18 million in initiatives designed to recover from damage and to prevent future flooding events. “This summer’s historic rains brought flooding and destruction to many areas throughout Dane County,” Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said.

U.S. Representative Mark Pocan met with ICE officials yesterday for information about the weekend's raids, but he said he left with few answers.

Local officials confirm 11 ICE arrests in Madison

The number of arrests made by federal immigration authorities in Dane County rose to at least 11 over the weekend, local officials confirmed Monday. Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced Friday that he was aware of at least six arrests by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officers, who he says operated without the knowledge of city officials.
