I have never been a huge fan of the NFL. I don't know why, but for some reason the league has just never appealed to me. It could be because Sundays are usually my day to attempt to be productive, or maybe because I don't really like to watch certain classy athletes-I won't name names-flap their arms like an eagle or pretend to drop their pants in front of a packed stadium after scoring a touchdown.
A tiny, luminous sea creature and its friendship with bacteria are shifting scientific focus on the benefits of microbes as the major components of the human body and other life forms. UW medical microbiologist Margaret McFall-Ngai wrote about the walnut-sized bobtail squid in the Nov. 12 issue of Science because the squid relies on a bacterial molecule that makes humans ill.
This fall, Madison residents have an opportunity to protect their lakes. And they can start in their very own front yards.
Modest Mouse started this year the same way The Flaming Lips started 2002-a band whose optimistic indie rock had, for years, deemed them the next big thing. Finally, after a string of critically acclaimed albums which had never amounted to a commercial success, the Lips pushed through with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. This was echoed two years later by Modest Mouse, when Good News for People Who Like Bad News brought the band from indie icons to mainstream ones. Modest Mouse has effectively become this year's Flaming Lips.
Technophobes beware, UW-Madison students are now more computer and Internet-oriented than ever, according to a UW-Madison Division of Information Technology survey.
Before it came out, \Ladder 49"" was a scary prospect for three main reasons. It looked to be an exploitative firefighter movie that was cynically greenlit in the wake of Sept. 11; it looked like an unnecessary update of ""Backdraft""; and it appeared that the preview had given away the entire movie. Now that the movie is here, everyone can rest assured that ""Ladder 49"" does not suffer in any of those areas. The only thing from which ""Ladder 49"" suffers is overwhelming and sometimes comical badness.
For a year in which the Big Ten largely failed to meet expectations, Wisconsin men's basketball (12-4 Big Ten, 25-7 overall) took care of business and crashed the cusp of the national scene. The Badgers' school-record 25 wins, first Big Ten Tournament title and No. 10 national ranking turned heads across America and earned the team its crown as Men's Team of the Year.
As much as talent determines fruition in team sports, so does the camaraderie of the players, and this year's UW women's tennis team has proven the combination can amount to a great deal of success.
The Teaching Assistants' Association is poised for a two-day walkout beginning tomorrow. Most members of the UW community are aware of the upcoming action, but there remains some general confusion about the bargaining process, whether or not the strike will happen and what constitutes \support"" for the TAA.
I was initially perturbed when I found \24"" pre-empted by President Bush's news conference Tuesday, but the moment he used the phrase ""hidden like 50 tons of mustard gas on a turkey farm"" to describe the possible state of WMD in Iraq, I knew it had been worth it.
The presidential campaign moved to its next stage Wednesday as Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., dropped out of the race while President Bush and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., prepared for their all but certain general election face-off.
\City of God"" provides a stark look into the drug-ridden Rio De Janeiro slums during the '60s, '70s and early '80s. While reading captions for two hours may get tiring, ""City of God"" is an eye-opening look at a world far removed from most people's realm of experience.
The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team makes a trip across the Minnesota border to face the two-time defending champion Minnesota Gophers. Seventh-ranked Wisconsin (9-4-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 15-7-6 overall) is chasing No. 1 North Dakota and No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth, which are both tied for first place in the WCHA and lead Wisconsin and St. Cloud State by three points.
