A butterfly flaps its wings somewhere and a hurricane ravages an entire area elsewhere. There might be days where everything about us feels small, insignificant and unnecessary. It is difficult to fathom what our being here really means or contributes in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes can all feel like the hypnotic chug-chug of a train rolling down old wooden tracks; the courses, clubs, weekends, games. Rolling down the same path it always has, making the same sounds and traveling the same route. It isn’t morbid but human curiosity to wonder what the world would be like if we hadn’t been pushed out, squalling and terrified from the first moment, into it.

Outside the Barrymore Theater on Saturday night, a long line of avid Tim and Eric fans excitedly anticipated the comedy duo’s performance with special guest Dr. Brule (played by the iconic actor John C. Reilly). As I entered the venue, hoards of fans purchased merchandise from the duo’s Adult Swim comedy show, some already in costume of their favorite characters. It was clear at that moment this crowd knew exactly what they were getting into and were happy to be a part of it.

What does it mean to be independent? For some, this question could
take them down a path of introspection, but I'm not talking
philosophical independence, I'm talking about FAFSA independence.
Many students work multiple jobs while going to school, take out
enough loans to cover tuition and live paycheck to paycheck for the
rest of their expenses.

Well, we've reached the end of the year, and because the final
issue next Thursday will be full of summer previews, this will be
my last column... or will it? Might some extra page space show up
conveniently? Will I flex my considerable power as arts editor and
kick some freshman's measly article off the page for my own
enjoyment? You'll have to wait and find out.

Although UW-Madison School of Business Dean Michael Knetter told
a women's leadership organization Tuesday the school undercharges
for its tuition, he clarified Wednesday he is sensitive to the
financial struggles many students face.

Most would think it absurd to step out into the snowy and frigid
weather wearing sandals, but after enjoying the luxurious spa
treatment of a pedicure during the winter months, that is exactly
what women are forced to do.

Although the official end of summer is still some weeks off and
hopefully we have at least two months before the large sheets of
ice move in, my tortured sinuses warn that it would be best to let
go of my sandal-wearing ambitions soon.

The Wisconsin softball team looked at this weekend's games
against Michigan State as an opportunity to gain ground in the Big
Ten standings and gather some momentum heading into the road
portion of its conference schedule. Unfortunately, it did neither,
dropping a pair of games to the Spartans.

In a Political Science 466 lecture last semester, Professor
Kenneth Mayer displayed a graph of information on Democratic and
Republican federal candidates. When asked to explain the absence of
third-party candidates from the data, he explained
matter-of-factly, \I apologize if any of you are Green or
Libertarian or socialist, but nobody cares about you."" It was one
of those moments when you had to raise your eyebrows at the
audacity of such a statement but also had to chuckle because you
knew it was more than a bit true.

After two years of writing weekly opinion columns, this will be
my last article. I've written on several different issues in the
past 55-plus weeks, but one of the main topics occupying this space
has been UW-Madison's poor labor policies. I choose to write about
this again, because I think it will continue to be of importance in
the next year and beyond.

Rabih Haddad, a 41-year-old Muslim relief worker from Lebanon,
was held in solitary confinement for four months at the Metro

any serious crime. In December of 2001, immigration agents took him
into custody and imprisoned him after they suspected that he was
involved with terrorist groups. His wife and four children were
granted minimal contact as the reasons for his incarceration were
kept secret.

Ariel Sharon, the prime minister of Israel, is a war criminal.
In 1982, he gave the order for the Israeli separatist militia, the
Phalange, to invade the Sabra and Shatilla Palestinian refugee
camps in Lebanon. Sharon led the Israeli Defense Forces assault
with more than 80,000 Israeli troops and 1,200 tanks. The American
Red Cross counted 10,000 dead and 100,000 homeless by the sixth day
of the Israeli attack on Lebanon. To Palestinians, Sharon is a
butcher. Israeli forces surrounded the camps as the Phalange, with
Israeli equipment, killed every man, woman and child it could
find.
