ST. LOUIS, Oct. 8-As I took my seat in the renovated gymnasium
of the Washington University athletic complex for the town hall
debate of the 2004 presidential debate series, I felt like the
luckiest guy in the world. On the precipice of witnessing the
symbolic embodiment of the most hotly contested presidential race
in modern American history, I realized that covering this debate
just may be the most important event on which I ever report.

Though at least one of my colleagues prefers to differ, I do, in
fact, enjoy \Star Wars"" to a great degree. While I am by no means
a ""fanatic,"" like many of our generation, the original ""Star
Wars"" trilogy holds a special place in my heart, especially in my
young cinematographic memories.

Although my passion is journalism, my pleasure is history. I
derive much enjoyment from contemplating and analyzing our past,
and that, I suppose, is why the thought of time travel excites me
so much.

Abill posted on a lamppost outside the Underground Bookstore
reads: \Panhandling prohibited in sidewalk area."" I guess no one
got the memo.

\Forrest Gump"" is a good film. ""The Godfather"" is a great
film. ""It's A Wonderful Life"" is a life-affirming film. But to
Badgers-past, present and future-the most important film ever made
is ""Back To School.""

After spending countless hours and millions of dollars on
research and development-errr... a few cans of Miller Lite and a
Big Mike's sub-I have come to the conclusion that there are
approximately five truly amazing days of Madison weather during the
entire school year.

Far too often lately in \The Long and Short of It"" I've donated
an inordinate amount of space to lamenting the constant deluge of
essays and exams that assail my daily life, while at the same time
advising you to forget about your responsibilities and ""go have
fun.""

Last week during a heated game of Texas Hold 'Em, my friend Matt
had a novel idea.

It was never really supposed to happen.

I certainly do not want to give the impression that the most
educational thing my travelmates and I did on our European vacation
was frequent houses of prostitution, but in a way, it sort of was.

At 4 p.m. this Thursday, I will be on an airplane headed east,

I'm going to try an experiment.

During the painfully limited amount of \free time""I have, I
like to think about what I'd rather be doing at this stage in my
life instead of writing six-page essays on the impact of Marxist
thought on 1960s counter-cultural radicalism or memorizing the
cloud variation over the southern coast of Madagascar. Usually it
involves being the lead singer of a Def Leppard cover band or
opening my own 1980s-themed State Street tavern, but lately, my
daydreaming has taken a more realistic turn.

Editor's note: Due to an editing error yesterday's feature
column \Find yourself this Valentine's Day"" attributed to Peter N.
Long, was actually the work of Amos Posner. Today's column is what
Long intended to run Tuesday. Posner's column can be found on our
Web site at http://www.dailycardinal.com.

Valentine's Day is approaching. And whether you're single or
coupled, it's there staring at you, waiting for you to react. But
for those of us who aren't in the mood to clothe ourselves in red
and play Romeo or Juliet, let's not delay the inevitable. Let's not
ignore the white elephant in the room just because we're scared to
face it. Mount up, folks. It's time to take Valentine's Day and
make it ours.

I love the University of Wisconsin. Every Tuesday, either
directly or indirectly, I express my affection for this school. And
last week, even though I pointed out a few of the university's
recent blunders, I still made it a point to convey my admiration
for the finest school around.

My fellow Badgers, as we reconvene upon this great university
after a month free of arduous essays and malevolent midterms, the
time has come for me, your appointed Tuesday purveyor of wisdom,
witticisms and candid observations, to deliver my semesterly State
of the University Address.
