José González tried to reclaim something lost with Vestiges & Claws. He’s heard modern folk artists sing their stories to indie pop radio’s delight, heard them brush up a singer-songwriter’s sound with popish glow and nostalgic love of romance woven between verses and choruses. He knows that, today, folk is a bastardized thing; what once gave a voice to many is now relegated to tropes and easily digested drama.

Well, it’s official. I mean, maybe it’s kind of official. Scott Walker is running for President. This should come as a surprise to no one who has been paying attention to the Governor over the past few months, whose rhetoric and travel schedule has been littered with higher office hopes. Today’s news begs a question, though: can he do it? Does he have the political power to become the Republican nominee? Short answer: absolutely he does.

Since I've started this column, I've never focused my 500 words,
give or take, on one author or one book. I've always wanted to
emphasize that literature isn't fragmented for me. It doesn't stop
when I get to the end, press together the cover and the back for a
few moments, absorbing, celebratin og, digesting and mourning
before I shut off the light. Writing is the world's constant
conversation, and it's a noise that is as comforting and constant
in my head as traffic. It's a six cup a day habit for me because I
need to think about life that seriously and love it and do
something about it.

In his past albums, Say Hi to Your Mom frontman Eric Elbogen has
been known to spill his angst into clever songs about spaceships
and robots; however, on the band's fourth and newest release,
Impeccable Blahs, he chose to move onto a slightly darker material.
The liner notes explicitly state that ""Impeccable Blahs is a
record about vampires."" However, they are ""not creepy goth
vampires but rather people like you and me who happen to get their
nourishment from drinking blood."" An interesting subject matter
for a band that once specialized in detailing the angst of girls
and video games, but it works well for them. Elbogen continues to
write witty lyrics, this time using vampire tendencies as a
metaphor for romantic human love, resulting in an album that is
both fun and intelligent.

\It gets real annoying, but you just have to ignore it,"" Scout
Niblett says of the comparisons between her and Chan Marshall, the
woman behind Cat Power. ""I had these ideas of like, next time
someone mentions it in a review or actually says 'You remind me of
Cat Power,' being like, 'Well, should I just, like, not make a
record, then? Do you just want to go out and buy a Cat Power or PJ
Harvey record instead?' I mean, it's gotten to the point where it
happens that often.""

There is a bill being discussed that will qualify illegal
immigrants and their children for in-state tuition. So far it has
attracted little attention, but there is some chance of controversy
if it continues forward into the Assembly. Introduced by state Rep.
Pedro Colon, D-Milwaukee, this is not a case of no-strings-attached
subsidizing, but a fair and legitimate way of providing equal
education opportunities to those who have worked for them.
