Last week, Mary Burke officially declared her candidacy in the 2014 gubernatorial election, and the announcement, while anticipated, left Wisconsin Democrats invigorated as she’s proven her ability to compensate for Gov. Scott Walker’s incredible political advantage. Burke not only has consummate experience making jobs in the private sector—allowing her to overcome Walker’s failed 250,000 jobs promise from 2010 and capturing the essence of the economic message Democrats always struggle with—but she also displays a certain level of authenticity. Unlike Walker, she isn’t a career politician jockeying for the next seat, only having served in a minor elected office since 2012.

There are a lot of really good indie movies. From the bizarre early work of now blockbuster filmmaker Harmony Korine, including wandering flicks such as “Gummo” and “Trash Humpers,” to Miranda July’s uncomfortably moving “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” many have found ways to make incredible cinematic experiences sans a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer budget or Academy actors.

Despite their arrest at the 2012 Mifflin Street Block Party and the Madison Police Department’s promise of a stricter, zero tolerance policy, some of the 103 students arrested last year plan to celebrate all the same, if not with little more discretion.

What a sad day Wednesday was for American democracy. In a 54-46 vote, the bill to extend background checks to private sales and gun shows failed. It was six votes short. Even with a majority in the Senate, it didn’t pass the 60 votes necessary, which is a whole other issue. Wednesday, we saw money triumph over all. As President Barack Obama said in his speech following the failure to pass the bill, 90 percent of Americans were for this common-sense law. Why? Because it’s common sense! It in no way infringes on our Second Amendment rights and 90 percent of America knew that, even some proud National Rifle Association households. Our democracy—or representative republic—whatever you want to call it, is supposed to be representative of the people and it failed us Wednesday. You would think after the bombing that occurred in Boston, seeing so many Americans suffer and grieve again, love could triumph over money. You would think seeing people come together in a time of tragedy, you would think, would show the Senate that America isn’t about money. No, the majority of us have our heads and hearts in the right places. Humanity could triumph over money. Well, say good-bye to that, because we just got completely screwed over. I feel like I just stepped into a time machine to an old familiar time when America was run only by the rich, white men. Oh, wait. Nope, I’m still here. We’re still here. And that’s troubling.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Big Ten is expanding. Wait, didn’t it just add Nebraska to make an even 12-team conference, complete with two divisions and a championship game? If you thought that would be enough, it looks like you were sorely mistaken.

I figure that, with the election coming up in the next week or so, I’d best input my final two cents about the political system. I’m becoming increasingly disturbed by what I see going on in the conservative spectrum of our national discourse. There’s been quite a bit of outrage over some comments made recently by one Richard Mourdock involving rape, which is only another grain of salt in a wound opened up by Todd Akin’s now-infamous “legitimate rape” statement made while defending pro-life positions. So I say to all self-respecting Americans: hasn’t this gone on long enough? Aren’t we sick of our elected representatives spewing pseudoscience as if they were some kind of political medium? The time to end this anti-intellectualism has come, and unless it does end, Americans are going to suffer because of it.

It is a bit embarrassing, but I first discovered that I could ride a two-wheel bicycle when I was in sixth grade. My deficiencies in that realm did not stem from ineptitude with the handle bars, but rather from my unwillingness to try new things. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” rang loudly in my ears. And since none of my arms and legs were broken as a result of bike riding, why fix this void in my life?
