Ellen Banakis sits in the terminal at Reagan National Airport
waiting to board a plane to Chicago for a conference, her second
business trip to the Windy City since July. After graduating from
UW-Madison in May, she headed to Washington, D.C. for the job that
is now sending her on this two-day, all expenses- paid journey by
Allstate Insurance.

After living at home, in apartments, in co-ops and abroad,
UW-Madison graduate students Toni Drake and Tim Gill finally found
the ideal living situation.

It's hard to believe that after living in Madison for almost
four years, I had never been to one of the finest events the city
has to offer-Dane County's Farmer's Market on Capitol Square. There
is no good reason I hadn't been to it before. Distance was never an
issue and I love food and anything food-related.

Now that we have all trickled back to Madison for the start of
second semester, we are able to reflect on a break that provided us
with some time away from the rigors of school. However, a select
few on this campus decided to take that break during the first
semester, rather than waiting for the holiday break.

Close to 100 protesters picketed in front of Johnny O's, 620
University Ave., and Brothers, 704 University Ave., this past
Friday and Saturday, objecting to the dress code of the two
taverns. The protesters spoke to bar-goers and passed out flyers
containing directions to other taverns with dress codes they felt
were acceptable.

The only discernible purpose that the new comedy \The Last
Shot"" serves is to emphasize how important stringently rewriting a
script, like ""The Last Shot's,"" would have been. This is a
virtually laughless, shamefully inane excuse for a farce, and its
pointless existence is a testament to all that is wrong with
Hollywood. How scribe-turned-auteur Jeff Nathanson was able to
convince executives to greenlight this hackneyed drivel is
questionable, but how he managed to assemble such a remarkable cast
is utterly bewildering. Unwelcome and unfunny, ""The Last Shot"" is
a haphazardly written, shoddily directed, shrilly acted debacle
that emerges as the worst Hollywood-on-Hollywood satire since the
Alan Smithee film ""Burn Hollywood Burn.""

Addressing the topics of social inequity and economic disparity,
Teach For America founder and director Wendy Kopp spoke to a
capacity crowd at the Great Hall in Memorial Union on Wednesday
night.

When one thinks about cafeteria food, images of mystery meat,
lunch ladies, and food fights usually come to mind. But here at the
UW, those are more or less a thing of the past. Dormitory dining
may still be a far cry from gourmet, but you might be surprised
what one swipe of your WisCard can buy.

As a senior, I'd like to issue a statement about a possible
teaching assistant work stoppage-Oh God, please strike.

Given the political instability of the Middle East, it is
becoming increasingly dangerous to be dependent on oil from this
region. The current solution emerging from the Republican Party
will open 2,000 acres of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for
exploration and drilling. If we really do not want to rely on the
Middle East for oil, we need to become less dependent on fossil
fuel.

State legislators yesterday lost the ability to decide whom they
will represent for a decade.

Without reading the book jacket, one would never guess Rebecca
Reisert's \The Third Witch"" is a new and imaginative rendition
that recounts the famous story of King Macbeth's insanity. The book
opens with scenes from the daily life of three hermit witches
before the reign of Shakespeare's Macbeth. The imaginative language
and gothic descriptions paint the perfect medieval landscape for
the setting.

As the nation formally ended 12 days of mourning Sunday, Bush
administration officials cautioned Americans not to expect a
massive military response to the Sept. 11 attacks but instead a
silent and invisible diplomatic and financial campaign aimed at
crippling terrorists.
