Two days after the Massachusetts special election put health
care on the back burner in Washington (that's assuming it was even
on the front burner), Governor Jim Doyle announced a non-state
funded health-care plan for adults without dependants. The
BadgerCare Basic program would cost enrolled Wisconsin residents
$130 per month and is designed to benefit those 20,000 people
currently on the BadgerCare Plus waiting list.

Fresh Madison Market opened its doors to the public two
Saturdays ago, and as the only full service downtown grocery store
it is sure to change the face of Madison and the downtown living
experience. It is difficult to believe that downtown Madison has,
up until now, lacked a full service grocery store. For years
residents of downtown Madison, and the surrounding area from the
near east side to the Vilas neighborhood, have been forced to drive
or take a bus to the Hilldale Metcalfe and Copps, the southside
Copps, or fork over for the inflated prices at Cap Center or Open
Market Pantry.

The storyline behind The xx is so old it's barely worth telling.
A group of four 20 year olds from London get together, record a
stunning debut and are praised as the next in line to overtake the
indie music throne. This version's stunning debut, xx, however,
sets itself apart as not really falling into that same trajectory.
It has no one distinctive influence or overbearing angst, but it
manages to stretch the genre to a limit by rearing back and
stripping it of nearly everything, showing encouraging amounts of
confidence in the band's finer moments. It's actually surprising
how young the members of The xx are considering how ballsy their
debut LP is, whether those be in the form of confidence of
hormones.

Last week was Sexual Health Week. You may have gotten the email
(which was not, just so everyone is perfectly clear, soliciting
anyone for sex or trying to sell anyone ""pornagraphy""). Thursday
was Sexual Health Fest on Library Mall, and while we were setting
up the tables, I looked at my Sex Out Loud coworkers, smiled a huge
smile, and exclaimed (at typical Erica volume), ""I LOVE MY
JOB!""

out—literally.

Back when I was a freshman, I made the regrettable mistake of
ripping on Dirty Dancing\ ad nauseam whenever I saw it gracing the
shelves of a female acquaintance's movie collection. This was
before I realized that nearly every girl I know not only owns but
cherishes her copy of that Patrick Swayze-Jennifer Grey dance hit,
and cracking wise about it is a rather unwise idea.

Too often Americans disregard the rest of the world and worry
only about problems that have a direct effect on them. Domestic
issues like Hurricane Katrina receive countless hours of news
coverage and dominate U.S. discourse. In what was one of America's
greatest natural disasters, over 1,300 people died and hundreds of
thousands were left homeless. However, the number of deaths pales
in comparison to the number of deaths other countries annually
sustain due to similar disasters. What happens in the rest of the
world seems to be of little importance to the average United States
citizen.

As the Badger women's basketball team (5-10 Big Ten, 11-16

crucial conference victories in its last four games, including a
sensational win Sunday against border rival Minnesota.

When students return to campus after three months of vacation,
it may be unusual to hear about all of the fun someone had at
summer camp. Yet, thousands of students will ditch a higher paid

playing sports outside, canoeing and hiking with kids.

A couple of surprises, reunions of teammates and sighs of relief
made for an interesting yet successful weekend for former Badgers
over draft weekend. Seven players were drafted out of Wisconsin,
and three more were snatched up by professional clubs immediately
following the selection process. The seven tied Wisconsin with
Virginia for third-most in this draft, right behind Oklahoma (11)
and Florida State (nine). The number was also the second most in UW
history, tied with the 2001 Badger draft class highlighted by
corner back Jamar Fletcher, right behind 1995's eight drafted
players.
