When the Badgers took the court in Seattle to play with a national title on the line, they seemed like the team of destiny, having just rolled past No. 1-seeded Texas. However, No. 2-seeded Penn State (19-1 Big Ten, 34-2 overall) was once again too much for the Badgers (12-8, 28-10) to handle, taking the title, 3-1.

While most of the campus is hunkered down studying, the women’s volleyball team is taking flight on the court and on a plane to Seattle to play in the NCAA Final Four. The Badgers (12-8 Big Ten, 27-9 overall) beat Purdue last weekend to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 2000. Wisconsin’s next opponent is No. 1 Texas (27-2, 16-0).

As the fans filed into the UW Fieldhouse Sunday for the No. 16 Badgers’ (6-4 Big Ten, 17-5 overall) matchup with the Illinois Fighting Illini (5-5, 9-11), there was considerably more orange than red. On a weekend where Halloween took center-stage, this difference in fan support seemed to be a bad omen, as the Illini knocked out the Badgers 3-1.

During the Wisconsin volleyball team’s recent home stand the Badgers beat two top-10 teams in a row for the first time in program history, knocking down then-No. 5 Michigan State Sunday and No. 7 Minnesota Wednesday. While their match against Illinois (4-5 Big Ten, 8-11 overall) won’t feature another top foe, the Badgers still look to play at a high level.
