Week 10 was once again a banger in college football, especially in the afternoon games. Just like last week, the 2:30 time slot was filled with upsets, great games and a ton of shake-ups for the committee to deal with. So what exactly happened? Let me take you on a journey through week ten.
In a relatively chaotic weekend in college football, the Big Ten conference provided the most dramatic upsets for a college football fan to gorge on. Iowa upset Ohio State at Kinnick Stadium. Michigan State gave themselves a chance to possibly visit Indianapolis in December as the Big Ten East representatives as it upset Penn State. Wisconsin continues its push to win a second straight Big Ten West crown as it dealt with an overmatched Indiana team by using crucial defensive plays in the fourth quarter to prevail.
In this week’s Cardinal Zone Football Podcast, sports editor Ben Pickman and football beat writer Lorin Cox preview Wisconsin’s upcoming matchup against Iowa. Topics discussed include Wisconsin’s wide receiver depth issues, UW’s running back stable and how the Badgers can make the College Football Playoff.
On the back of a week where Iowa upset Ohio State by 31 points and the Badgers fell in the AP rankings after a comfortable win at Indiana, senior defensive end Alec James is rather uninterested in any of college football’s recent chaos.
This year ESPN released a list called “Ranking the happiness of every college football fan base.” The survey took into account program power, rivalry dominance, coaching stability, recruiting trend, revenue growth and Twitter buzz. The results were in many ways unsurprising. Wisconsin came in at 14th out of 128 FBS programs. Predictably, its strong suits according to the survey were program power (95/100), revenue growth (98/100) and rivalry dominance (99/100). It’s hard to argue with those numbers.
It happened — Saquon Barkley had a “bad” day. But could this also show how dependent Penn State is on their star running back? Penn State had been averaging 441 yards per game. On Saturday, they were held to just 283 yards of total offense. If Penn State wants to be a legit title contender, they’ll have to find a way to score without relying solely on Barkley.
Heading into the final third of the season, the Indiana Hoosiers looked to play the role of The Little Engine That Could — both so close to climbing over the mountain, yet so far. In what has been an extremely underwhelming year for IU, who stand at a 3-5 overall record, the Hoosiers are still in search for their first Big Ten victory.
No.4 Wisconsin (6-0 Big Ten, 9-0 overall) overcame an early 10-point deficit Saturday at Indiana (0-6, 3-6) en route to a decisive 45-17 victory.
In a wild and hectic week nine on the national college football scene, the Big Ten certainly didn’t disappoint. Penn State-Ohio State turned out to a be one of the best games of the season and set the Buckeyes up for a National Championship run. Northwestern knocked off Michigan State to throw off the Big Ten East. Meanwhile in the Big Ten West, the Badgers continued their winning ways by beating Illinois and maintaining their two-game lead over NU.
With close games, some Ames magic and the first big coach firing, week nine in college football was spooky enough to live up to the Halloween weekend hype. And when the dust settled and polls were released Sunday afternoon, they looked topsy-turvy like it too was recovering from a hangover. Here’s what you goons missed on Halloweekend.
The Wisconsin “football factory” has been working overtime this season to produce quality running backs in a seemingly neverending army of talented ball carriers in the backfield.
Aaron Thatcher, an actor who portrays University of Wisconsin mascot Bucky Badger has been struggling to separate his work and home life lately, according to his girlfriend.
Michael Deiter finally got to live the glory he was always forced to watch as a bystander.
The Chinese philosopher Confucius once said that “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.” William Shakespeare echoed him, saying “The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. — Two years ago, when Garrett Groshek first arrived at UW-Madison, he had little to no experience at the running back position. Instead, he was a quarterback at Amherst High School, in Amherst, Wis., where he completed 68.8 percent of his passes for almost 2,400 yards and 41 touchdowns during his senior year.
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. — The most important member of the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers’ defense in their 24-10 win over Illinois might have been the guy who didn’t play a single snap.
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. — After its first nine plays on offense, No. 5 Wisconsin (5-0 Big Ten, 8-0 overall) had amassed a mere 13 yards. But as the Badgers prepared for their third punt in as many series, they received a break courtesy of the Illinois punt return unit.
In a few weeks, once winter strikes Madison, Nick Nelson will spend more time figuring out what he’s going to wear around campus than what he was previously used to. Two years ago, while Nelson attended the University of Hawaii, he went to late-fall and winter classes in basketball shorts and slides. But his decision to play football closer to his home in Glenarden, Maryland as well as in a bigger conference, has forced him to make a fashion adjustment: He now spends more time deciding what he’s going to wear out of the house.
Early in the second quarter against Maryland Saturday, sophomore wide receiver Quintez Cephus caught the ball in the middle of the field and wiggled loose for a 30-yard gain.
