Looking forward to the next school year, Associated Students of Madison Chair Andrew Bulovsky said he feels the 19th session of student council will be more productive than sessions past.
Over the course of the past several weeks this campus has been witness to many events and media pieces addressing the topic of sexual assault. The conversation about this pervasive problem has been constructive and enlightening, and it would be a shame to see this open kind of discussion go away once the issue is out of the limelight. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but dedicating one month to sexual assault is not enough to mitigate the problem, and this campus needs to find a way to keep the conversation going year round.

As the Republican primaries slowly reveal Mitt Romney as the obvious contender for the United States presidency, focus on the economy is off the backburner and has found itself being touted again as a serious national issue. Social conservatism glib talk has hopefully made its exodus with the likes of Rick Santorum. Social issues have distracted discussion of issues such as jobs and the economy, issues more pressing and of far more importance than almost anything else being spouted about during the height of the debates.
Madison police found an out-of-state college student who was beaten and bleeding near North Lake and Langdon streets early Saturday morning.

Compared to the 2009 and 2010 Mifflin Street block parties, which were hazily remembered but mostly calm affairs, last year’s celebration was out of control. Although there were fewer arrests last year than in 2010, there were more than 20 trips to detox, three injured officers, three sexual assaults and two stabbings. I love reveling alongside my fellow students but Mifflin needs to be a party where everyone can go have fun and not get stabbed, so some changes need to be made.
As spring break drew ever closer, a dark, dreary prospect loomed ahead of me. What I’m referring to is not my failure to get my shit together and plan an unforgettable road trip with my homies to, say, the Grand Canyon or wine country. No, what I’m alluding to is the fact that upon returning to my childhood residence I would be forced to take baths for a solid week. Let me repeat—I would have to take baths for a week straight.

Since the 1890s, The Daily Cardinal has been a lens through which Wisconsin students have seen their world. Reprinted from the pages of the Cardinal, these article excerpts show how Badgers experienced some of the biggest events of the past 120 years.
YEAR 2005—so begins this year’s cinematic reimagining of the ’80s TV series “21 Jump Street” that launched the career of Johnny Depp. We open on metal-mouth-clad Jonah Hill donning a pair of those ridiculously, impractically baggy jeans from the turn of the (21st) century that have been all but forgotten in favor of their hipster antithesis, skinny jeans.
Commentators nationwide have dubbed Wisconsin’s past political season “historic,” “chaotic,” “momentous,” “groundbreaking” and more. One Wisconsin legislator disagrees.
The recent shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman has grabbed the country in rapt attention, especially because the perpetrator of the killing has not been detained yet. This is because Florida’s ‘Stand your ground’ law grants immunity to people who have used deadly force in their own defense. The lack of substantial witnesses in this case has also compounded the applications of the law, because there is no concrete evidence proving Zimmerman was not acting in self- defense. A similar incident occurred in Slinger, Wis. earlier this month in which a 20-year old man, Bo Morrison, was shot dead by a homeowner, Adam Kind, upon whose porch the former had intruded after partying at a neighbor’s house late after midnight. Wisconsin’s Castle Doctrine was invoked in this situation, and Kind has not been detained in relation to this shooting.
