TV commercials sure have taught me a lot about the everyday products I as a consumer take for granted. For instance, did you know that chewing gum brings you closer to your daughter? That wearing the right deodorant causes every woman you meet to wish they were your next sexual conquest? And great news about alcohol! Drinking beer automatically makes you the life of any party, while vodka turns you into a trendy urbanite who gets to go to nightclubs packed with beautiful people. Here I was, oblivious to the fact that the products I use all the time have been improving my personal life and correcting emotional flaws I would have thought could only be remedied by a good therapist. Needless to say, I owe the four corporations that make everything we buy these days a debt of gratitude for churning out such helpful products.

How tired do you feel right now? How many papers, work shifts and parties are pulling on your conscious, demanding your attention? How are you going to cope? Students and doctors question the largely unknown long-term effects of stimulant drugs and whether they are worth the risk.

When future Badgers and roommates-to-be Abigail Miller and Megan Baker first made plans to meet on University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus Sunday, they did not anticipate joining a crowd of thousands in welcoming home the Wisconsin men’s basketball team.

I recently asked a friend what she thinks will be the most useful language to know in the future. Her answer? A computer coding language. Although it wasn’t the answer I was looking for, it makes sense.

Increasing job insecurity in an unstable economy makes getting a college degree a double-edged sword: the financial investment is a risk that may not pay off, but at the same time, without a degree there are few secure and potentially fulfilling career options.

University of Wisconsin-Madison senior Claire Zhuang was walking along State Street late one night when she encountered a couple of men who called out to her, trying to get her attention. Homeward bound after a long day, she was not interested in their advances.

The downside of getting into a relationship is the inevitability that it will end one way or another. It’s easy to dwell on this, especially since we’re young and things are changing so quickly that the long-term durability of a relationship isn’t always guaranteed. We sometimes find it’s time to just get out and move on, but unfortunately it isn’t always easy and seldom are break-ups mutual either, even if we wish they were. There are ways to break up to help soften the blow. This shouldn’t be seen as just advice for the breaker-uper, but also the broken-upee.

Spring is on its way, and with it comes a newly elected body of student government! Yay? Come on, you know you didn’t care that much. But when you think about it, they control the money, so it matters where that money is going. What does it say about us if fossil fuel companies profit from our investments? Well, let’s see what these new Associated Students of Madison people had to say. I was fortunate enough to attend last week’s ASM election results and after all the winners were announced, the press was given an opportunity to ask their questions. Now, it was my turn. I’m not a journalism major. I’m just a modestly concerned student filling in for someone. I also happen to believe in climate change and, being bitter over this polar vortex crap, decided to first ask them their stances on campus fossil fuel divestment. Anyone? Their silence felt like when some of Ellen’s jokes fell flat at the Oscars, but she still got laughs out of pity. She knows she wasn’t on her game that night. She knows.

Sex. Now that I have your attention, what do you think is better than X-rated adult movies? If after five minutes of racking your brain and scratching at inappropriate places you could not come up with an answer, shame on you. But I can tell you that five-minute long sexually explicit films made by ordinary people like us—next time you’re on the bus, it’s a good bet that the people next to you are among them—definitely is a winner.

Last Monday the Cardinal opinion staff’s own Michael Podgers wrote an article criticizing a program put on by Badger Catholic during Valentine’s Day. The program, run outside of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, featured men giving away roses to women that had notes in them. In his piece, Mr. Podgers criticized Badger Catholic for reinforcing outdated gender stereotypes, and demeaning women by self-determining for them their inherent dignity.

Mr. Podgers, the Rose Campaign last Thursday (Feb. 13) was trying to accomplish a good, to challenge a mindset that limits sex to pleasure or an action that is not completely giving of one’s self. You incorrectly identified the goals of the campaign by Badger Catholic and claimed the idea that the men involved were imposing views on women through the passing out of roses with short notes attached.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Ad Hoc Diversity Planning Committee, charged with drafting a new diversity plan, released preliminary suggestions Feb. 18 for improving aspects of diversity and inclusivity at the university. While we are glad these plans are in motion, we believe the success of the plan depends on campus input and making sure this draft—no matter how rough it may be—is available to the campus community.

A simple taste of Madison’s scenery and school spirit is all it takes to clinch many incoming students’ commitment to the Badger family. However, had Maria Espino been exposed to the environment pre-enrollment, she said there is a good chance the ethnic uniformity of the student body would have dissuaded her from becoming the junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison she is today.

Admit it—you’ve always wondered if it would be possible to live in a storage space. Set up a single mattress with a distastefully modern Ikea nightstand in the dimly lit box. Maybe a personal shag carpet rug, because if you’re living in a storage unit, you’re most likely a leftover ’70s hippie. Well, Brave Baby, the indie five-piece from Charleston, S.C. hasn’t been living in one, but they’ve been practicing in one since their inception in January, 2012. The band will be in Madison for Communion’s February show and I got to speak with them about their eclectic debut album, their lives growing up in different southern towns and their unique practice spot.
