On Satruday night I humored my 20-year-old housemates and went to a childish little apartment party at La Ville. It was worth it to see the smiles on their little faces as they spastically gyrated on the carpeted dance floor with their girlish, baby-faced companions. But I stuck out like a sore thumb, a man among boys. And men go to the bars.

We’re now three full weeks into the 2014 college football season. That has given us enough time to peruse box scores, watch plenty of highlights and formulate some legitimate Heisman Trophy watch lists rather than preseason predictions that often turn out to be wildly incorrect. Check back in the following weeks for updated rankings.

When we think of ways to prevent or treat cancer, temperature control usually isn’t high on the list. But, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led by Dr. Caroline Alexander at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, have made crucial progress in understanding a link between ambient temperature and how it may affect our ability to resist tumors.

Unlike pro sports, the head coach in college athletics is far and away the most important person in the program. While some head coaches in the big leagues carry the dual title of GM and head coach, every head coach in the preps has to be both.

Statement 1: Félix Hernández is the most valuable player in the American League. Statement 2: Félix Hernández is a pitcher. It has become a prevailing wisdom in the baseball fandom and media that Statement 2 makes Statement 1 somewhere between unlikely and virtually impossible. This wisdom was widely discussed when Justin Verlander was humiliating batters in 2011 and some saw fit to lower him on their MVP ballots or drop him altogether. Verlander almost certainly would have lost the award if his team hadn’t made the playoffs.

If you’re like me, you’ve been enthralled with the 2014 NBA Draft ever since the media’s talking heads proclaimed last fall that this would be the most talented draft in years. Not only would there be potential all-stars and franchise players at the top, there would also be many quality role players to be found in the middle and later parts of the draft.

It’s been a strange trip for Cloud Nothings, Dylan Baldi’s jangle-pop-cum hardcore punk outfit from Cleveland, Ohio. Their first two records—mostly unassuming; pleasant, if not forgettable—were generally kitschy little indie rock collections. Lo-fi, fuzzy and bubbling with an infectious warmth. It was a bit of a shock when 2012’s wonderful Attack on Memory threw it all away in favor of a raucous post-hardcore assault. It’s certainly the high point of the band’s career to date—even if this year’s Here and Nowhere Else is an absolute blast, it never captures the manic/depressive jitters of its forerunners, sucked dry of lead guitarist Joe Boyer’s interplay with Baldi’s chest-thumping rhythms. It’s almost been like watching a band slide backwards into the primordial ooze; texture, style and finesse have all given way to primal urgency. It’s been fun, but whether or not it’s the right choice for the group still remains to be seen.

The final product, Enter the Slasher House, is a fun, wild and eclectic pop album that digs deep into the finer details of psychedelic music.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it’s almost that time of year. When fans start whipping out their rally towels, bragging rights against the team you hate the most are at an all-time high and men grow beards that could put a bear to shame.

I’m sure you all have your guilty pleasures—those delightful bits of enjoyment you try to eradicate from your search histories in attempts to salvage your credibility—and I am no exception. Whether you enjoy the occasional supernatural romance or find some sort of bizarre pleasure in watching bourgeois housewives pull each others’ hair, these underrated—or maybe properly rated—TV trifles are both the joy and the bane of our existence. Here are some of my current favorite guilty pleasures. I won’t judge you if you don’t judge me.
