In support of the first annual Madison Comedy Festival on his “Under No Influence” tour, comic Chris D’Elia performed in front of a packed crowd of college-aged fans who eagerly anticipated his material. D’Elia’s set pandered mainly to the Dane Cook repertoire of sex jokes, gender and race observations and wild movement.

Mary Timony, the main force behind the recently formed Ex Hex, is a punk veteran. First as a member of Autoclave in the early ’90s, then Helium later in the decade, Timony was a powerful figure of heavy, melodic slacker punk.

This past Monday, amongst the long hours of studying for midterms, a vivacious and spirited concert took place at the Orpheum. Students and locals alike made their way down State Street to see Timeflies perform. Despite the pouring rain, this concert continued to fill up with devotees by the minute. With the scent of fresh rainfall around me, I was ready for the concert to begin.

Last week, the College Republicans wrote an article in The Badger Herald urging the females of this campus to vote for incumbent Gov. Scott Walker, and gave several reasons therein. While I found the piece to be wildly entertaining, there were a couple aspects that particularly caught my eye. The two claims that I found to be especially questionable posited that Walker was both fighting to make abortion safer for women and working to help them become financially independent. If both of those seem ridiculous at first glance, then you have a fairly astute first glance, because that’s exactly what they are.

With the wind of a recent album behind him, Grieves delivered a performance that could not have been found anywhere else with so many bangs for so few bucks on a Sunday night, in front of a packed High Noon Saloon.

When Oklahoma City Thunder “point guard” Russell Westbrook woke up to the news that his superstar teammate and reigning MVP Kevin Durant had a Jones fracture in his foot that could sideline him for approximately two months, the tune of LMFAO’s “Shots!” rang through Westbrook’s head, except the shots he was dreaming of were a little different than what is being referenced in the song.

UW-Madison junior Jackson Spingler said Jake Anderson, the junior who sustained a spinal injury after diving into Lake Mendota last month, has been his best friend since high school. Anderson took Spingler under his wing and they have done almost everything together since.

Husband. Father. Brother. Friend. Journalist. Badger. The UW-Madison community lost one of its own Friday as Wisconsin State Journal writer Tom Mulhern passed away from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease at the age of 56.

Well… that Kansas City Royals game was fun. Twelve innings of multiple ties and lead changes, truly memorable plays and heroes like Brandon Finnegan, Brandon Moss and Jarrod Dyson all in front of an electric crowd and in winner-take-all, no-tomorrow stakes? Yeah, I’d like to see more of that.

Outside the Barrymore Theater on Saturday night, a long line of avid Tim and Eric fans excitedly anticipated the comedy duo’s performance with special guest Dr. Brule (played by the iconic actor John C. Reilly). As I entered the venue, hoards of fans purchased merchandise from the duo’s Adult Swim comedy show, some already in costume of their favorite characters. It was clear at that moment this crowd knew exactly what they were getting into and were happy to be a part of it.

Approaching the hole-in-the wall haven that is The Frequency, I could feel some real live music magic in the air. The rest of the square was pretty much dead, but the lull of bright lights and cigarette smoke lured us magnetically towards the end of the block, where we found musicians and concert-goers alike basking in the awesomeness of the first quarter of the night.

It was Sept. 26 and thousands of UW students and Madison citizens were trying to catch the slow-wave that stretched across Camp Randall during the South Florida Bulls football game. Later that night though, only a couple hundred people headed to the Majestic Theatre to catch the psychedelic waves of Panda Bear, aka Noah Lennox, the noisy-yet-harmonizing percussionist and singer for Animal Collective. Lennox put on a show filled with wild visuals and blaring strobe lights for the Majestic patrons while performing loads of new material.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Maya Angelou is a classy lady and I completely agree with her. Every fictional and true story has the right to be told and heard. Well, unless your story is stupid. Then you should probably go sit in a corner and reflect over your many failings as a human being.

Some might say that beginning my residency as The Daily Cardinal’s video games columnist with an editorial on a mobile game is inauspicious. But amidst the several titles entangling me, none pull as much focus as the stark “Desert Golfing.” Described by iOS developer Adam Atomic (“Canabalt,” “Hundreds”) as “the ‘Dark Souls’ of ‘Angry Birds’”—perhaps the most absurd form of description, akin to the constant ringing question begging, “When will video games have their “Citizen Kane” moment?,” whatever that means—it is a spare experience that closely evokes the beloved RPG’s unforgiving indifference.
