Camp Randall has been the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s full-time football stadium since 1917. Considering its long and storied history, the Oct. 1 announcement that the stadium’s field would soon become known as Barry Alvarez Field was not received passively; the reaction was particularly strong among those with poor reading comprehension who believed that the stadium itself was being renamed.

For the last week, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game” has dominated my life. My mother, sister and I attempted to dissect the tiniest details of the Korean survival drama for the entirety of an hour-long road trip. A friend and I discussed Halloween costume ideas, and then subsequently scoured Amazon for the now infamous green tracksuits that figure as key imagery of the show. At the beginning of a work call, my supervisor opened with, “Have you watched ‘Squid Game’ yet?”

Most students have rejoiced about being in-person again. We’re able to see our friends, make new ones and actually know how tall our professors are. But, some students are missing the ease and privacy of Zoom school. The main reason? Students actually have to shower now, so as not to offend their classmates.

Upon returning to campus, the most common back-to-school question I was asked was: “What did you do over the summer?” In short, I would always respond: “I worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), without being a CNA.” While this description confused my peers, this was the best way to summarize my summer job.

Last weekend my little sister and I saw a dead cat on the side of the road. We were driving home from campus on our way to our parents’ house to visit, do laundry and eat a home-cooked meal when we saw it. It was blotched black and white, laying down as if it was only sleeping. But it was just a foot off the road, unmoving, on top of a piece of cardboard.

With students from all over the state, country and world flocking back to Madison and life seemingly returning to a semblance of normalcy, there is great excitement for the year ahead in the minds of those who simply desire to return to the old. A return to some sense of normal is necessary, even. However, with the evolution of new COVID-19 variants and the rise of breakthrough infections despite vaccination, a mindless return to normal proves to be reckless. A more cautious safety plan — perhaps not to the same extent as earlier in the pandemic, but cautious still — may very well be necessary as we continue to learn more about this insidious pathogen.

The reality of university education throughout the past year and a half has been far from what many college students have pictured. The “normalcy” of college disappeared along with the increasing cases of COVID-19 in March 2020, and it hasn’t been back since. Rising juniors and seniors this semester have barely caught a glimpse of what the University of Wisconsin fully holds; most rising sophomores haven’t even seen a lecture hall, and incoming freshmen are just holding their breath in anticipation of what this semester will bring.

Walking into the venue for Cabinet of Curiosity's “Sea Change”, a feeling of familial intimacy might wash over you. Metal chairs that anyone might find in storage are arranged in rows and create makeshift aisles in a gravel parking lot. Standing speakers blast the calls of seagulls, the crashing of waves, and the rollings of thunder as audience members search for whatever empty seats were left. Performers, stagehands and other staff hustle around the hulking ship set making last minute preparations. It feels like cousins and other distant relatives had called all members of the family to report to the backyard to witness a play or musical number they'd been practicing all day. In a word, it feels like home.
