The frigid morning air roused my shivering body into a wakeful
state. My mind wasn't quite there, and I felt like I'd just
suffered a pretty decent amount of head trauma. It was dark, too
dark for what time it must have been... Where the hell was I? The
smell of manure and rotting hay filled my nostrils, and I vomited
the little food that was left in my stomach all over the cement
floor. My mouth was dry—really dry—what I would have given for a
glass of water. Where was I, and what day was it? What had happened
last night? Many questions awaited my unprepared head.

Walking out of my apartment, I'm instantly hit with whirls of
leaves, the crisp scent of the air and a cool breeze teeming with
flu particles: yep, it's Fall.

On a weekend that began with a message from head coach Mark
Johnson, a highlight video from their national championship run in
the 2008-'09 season and the unveiling of a banner celebrating that
achievement, the Wisconsin women's hockey team quickly learned that
their opponents would not bow down and let the Badgers cakewalk to
another title.

Not everyone reads. I've always had this sneaking and somewhat
disturbing suspicion. To tell you the truth, sometimes I'd wake up
in a cold sweat at the thought that someone, somewhere, actually
does not like reading. Ever.

State Street after dark. The quaint street sheds
its charming daytime appeal for the bustle and mischief of night.
Crowds of people emerge from their homes, their naps and their
boredom with the same quest: to have a good time.

One of my favorite professors here likes to talk about how, in
international politics, style is substance. He says that when
global leaders interact, their strategies and appearances can be
just as important as what they actually achieve.

There has been a YouTube clip that has been making rounds for a
couple of months called ""Everything's amazing, nobody's happy.""
In it, comedian Louis CK derides our current culture of indignant
impatience and self-righteous consumerism. It has struck with
resonance because he challenges us to take a second and
self-reflect. We have become a culture of me-firsts and
gimme-gimmes. We have become indolent and opulent and selfish. We
entered the 21st century thinking that since we were standing at
third, we had hit a triple. The harsh realities of the last year
have hopefully begun a much-needed wake-up call: We are nine years
late in making the changes we need to move forward into this new
century. The changes aren't radical or daunting.
