When ""Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"" was in theaters,
Kate Winslet compared Charlie Kaufman to Shakespeare and repeatedly
referred to him as the greatest writer of our generation. After
only a handful of films, not only has Kaufman reinvented the
meta-movie; with ""Being John Malkovich,"" ""Adaptation"" and
""Eternal Sunshine"" (ignore ""Human Nature""), he's been
responsible for three of the weirdest, and best, movies ever made.
If you doubt his enormous talent in the slightest, watch what
happens when others try and mimic his inimitable style. First we
had ""Eternal Sunshine"" director Michel Gondry's ""The Science of
Sleep,"" which was equal parts eccentric and irritating, and now
we've got Marc Forster's ""Stranger Than Fiction,"" a somewhat
engaging existential romp that, despite a wonderful central
performance from Will Ferrell, never quite manages to come
together.

The move from book to film does not always end well. There have
been brutal disasters (All the King's Men"") and there have been
wild successes (""American Psycho""), and while ""Running With
Scissors"" may not fall into either category, it is a wonderful
experience. It's colorful and beautifully cast. Annette Bening and
Joseph Fiennes are spectacular. The movie's pulse is hard and
clear, almost like a human heart as it takes its audience through
odd moments of suspense, authentic human rage and a colorful
mystique that cannot be defined.

When it comes to playing in Big Ten matches, there certainly is
no place like home for the UW volleyball team. With an electric
crowd of 5,487 fans behind them, Wisconsin (9-3 Big Ten, 17-5
overall) became the first team to hand a loss to No. 2 Penn State
(11-1, 22-1) this season, sweeping the Nittany Lions 30-22, 30-28,
30-25 and putting an end to their 41-match Big Ten win
streak.

A fresh new sound is storming out of New York City. Blending
rock 'n' roll with many experimental elements mixed into their
music, the Damnwells are returning to glory after their debut album
Bastards of the Beat. Bastards generated quite a buzz, leaving fans
excited and wanting to hear more from this foursome. Their answer:
Air Stereo, which was released in August. Now, the Damnwells are
headlining a tour, and their next stop is Madison.

You find yourself walking alone late at night. A man walks up to
you and asks for a match. You look him straight in the eye and tell
him, ""Sorry, I don't have one."" He then asks you for directions
to the nearest gas station where he could find some. You tell him
the directions. He then advances towards you, tells you he doesn't
believe you and that you are lying. You freeze.

Although Cinderella once claimed that ""a dream is a wish your
heart makes,"" most of us can attest that it is rarely that simple.
Though it may still be an over-simplification of a complex process,
Stephane, the hero of Michel Gondry's ""The Science of Sleep,"" may
have the recipe more correct. ""Dreams,"" he claims, are among
other things ""memories of the day, love, friendships and
relationships."" It is the jumble of these that make up our dreams,
and make going to sleep such an adventure.

This Saturday the Badgers will be in Ann Arbor, Mich. to play
No. 6 Michigan, who defeated No. 2 Notre Dame this past weekend. If
their 47-21 win over the Irish is any indication, the Wolverines
appear to have hit their stride, just in time to avenge last year's
loss to the Badgers.
(09/18/06 6:00am)
The Badgers found themselves in an all too familiar situation
Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Leading the
Michigan Wolverines 1-0 with only 28 seconds left in regulation, UW
gave up a game tying goal that sent the Big Ten opener into
overtime.

Five days from today marks the five year anniversary of an event
that single-handedly altered the course of the world. September 11,
2001 is a day that will forever be etched in the minds of all
Americans, as they were shocked and stunned at the sight of their
own flesh and blood being mercilessly slain.

Aloha used to be a band with their heads in the clouds, creating
songs that floated above the listener, painting hazy, dreamy
pictures with their ever-present vibraphone filling every corner of
their songs. Some Echoes, their self-assured new album, proves that
these days the band keep things a lot more lucid—their heads are
still partially in the clouds, but their feet are planted firmly on
the ground.

The brainless arguments against writer-director Paul Greengrass'
stunning new docudrama United 93,\ the first major Hollywood film
to depict the events of Sept. 11, 2001, are reminiscent of an
episode of ""South Park."" The episode dealt with Jared the Subway
spokesman inadvertently making the town think he had AIDS, and once
the problem was solved, Stan and Kyle discovered that the touchy
issue was dated enough to be fair game for poking fun. Trey Parker
and Matt Stone got a lot of mileage out of ridiculing the
assumption that sensitive subjects cannot be tackled by art for an
unwritten but requisite number of years. Some rigorously
politically correct loudmouths, nearly all of whom have not
actually seen the film, have assailed ""United 93"" for being an
exploitative capitalist venture that is coming out way too soon.
This cynical criticism is as ignorant as it is frustrating and
laughable, as it not only presupposes that art is not capable of
being relevant or essential, but implies that it should not
be.

It is possibly the only stable and steady relationship in the
realm of indie pop. Instead of writing songs based on failed
relationships and heartaches, Mates of State have celebrated their
bountiful relationship, love and joy for each other in their music.
The bond they share proves to be incredibly strong and deep,
especially on their latest release, Bring It Back.

Milwaukee is becoming a hotbed of noise. The Good Luck Joes, a
band that records and resides there, is quickly emerging among the
city's elite class of bands breaking out and being recognized on
the national scene. The band's talent, musical maturity and
youthful enthusiasm are by far the most refreshing to come out of
the city.

Remember that movie that was only famous for its beaver shot but
not for actually being a good movie? Yeah, let's make another one
of those.\ Well put, David Spade, well put. Spade was referring to
the baffling decision to make a sequel to 1992's ""Basic
Instinct,"" a trashy thriller scripted by notoriously-overpaid
sleaze peddler Joe Eszterhas (""Showgirls,"" ""Jade"") and directed
by Paul Verhoeven (""Starship Troopers,"" ""RoboCop,"" ""Total
Recall"").

During the lazy days of summer, kids fling themselves across
their Slip ‘n' Slide, but in Paige's waterworld Slip ‘n' Slides
move indoors for drunken teenagers. At a house party, Paige sprayed
her kitchen-sink hose, coating the floor with water. Everyone flew
across tile, bashing into cabinets. This is dangerous for aqua
amateurs, but Paige is a professional. Just last year, Paige was
crowned Minnesota State Champion Synchronized Swimmer after a
stunning routine to a techno rendition of Ozzie Osborne's Crazy
Train.\ Good luck with that, Paige.
