In the far southern reaches of Panama, on the narrow strip of
land that connects North and South America, lies one of the few
remaining unconquered regions in the western hemisphere. The area,
known as the Darien Gap, is the only break in the great
Pan-American Highway which stretches from the Northern Alaska, to
Southern Chile.

In the course of a traffic stop in Missouri, highway patrol
officers found a 3-foot-long rocket with an electric launcher,
attached to an elaborate system of pulleys in the trunk of the car
of two men. The rocket, which could probably be triggered from the
driver's seat, was found stuffed with $145,000 worth of
methamphetamine. The patrolmen who arrested the pair believe the
contraption was for quick disposal of their inventory if they got
cornered.

In 37 minutes I will be stuffing my face with cottage cheese
drenched in a can of mandarin oranges and man, will it feel good.
So good, in fact, that I will probably feel more satisfied than the
guy who won the Ironman Sunday.

Before I venture into conspiracy theory, I'll admit in the
interest of full disclosure that I have a longstanding,
comically-exaggerated phobia of mallard ducks.

East of the Capitol lies a new pizzeria named Roman Candle, at
1054 Williamson St. Though only open for four weeks, it is stuffed

caf??-style environment with good home-cooking.

Everybody's favorite blue Sesame Street monster who inhales tons
of cookies will soon become a more health-conscious American
citizen. That's right, Cookie Monster is going on a diet. Don't
worry, he will not be eating low-carb bread, bunless hamburgers or
whatever stupid Atkins-friendly options there are nowadays.
Instead, he will be decreasing his cookie intake and will
incorporate fruits and vegetables into his daily food regimen.
Cookies will no longer be \an anytime food,"" but rather ""a
sometimes food.""

Whenever I go home, to visit my family there is only one thing I
look forward to more than sleeping in a warm, bug and mouse-free
house: opening up a fully stocked fridge.

When an author with a cult following like Chuck Palahniuk shows
his face in Madison, scores of fans emerge from UW-Madison's

Nothing is better than biting into a huge hot ham and cheese
hoagie that just oozes with goodness stuffed inside. Or a savory
hot roast beef sandwich piled high with mozzarella cheese, peppers
and au jus. But where can one find this kind of place on campus?
That's the problem--nowhere. Where I am from, these types of places
are like a Walgreen's or Starbucks and can be found on basically
any corner one happens to stumble upon. These are the kinds of
places that serve basically anything and everything, ranging from
hot sandwiches and burgers to hot dogs and gyros. If UW-Madison
would just add one of these places to State Street or somewhere on
campus, they would not only satisfy students' needs of getting
something quick to eat in between classes (besides fast food) it
would also cater to the masses around bar time.

The Wisconsin volleyball team, taking full advantage of playing
at home for the first two rounds, advanced Saturday night to the
NCAA Regional with a stirring sweep over the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish, winning 36-34, 30-16 and 30-16. Wisconsin beat the Loyola

Myles Teddywedgers, 101 State St., is the lynch pin and canary
of State Street and the Capitol Square. When State Street meets its
eastern end, the pie shop offers a transition from the filler-food
offerings common on the 500 and 600 blocks of State Street to the
sit-down-and-take-your-time ambience you'll see on the Square.
Also, like a bird in a mineshaft, Myles Teddywedgers indicates the
overall business health of the surrounding area.

The constant clamoring this election cycle about voter fraud is
nothing more than partisan politicking. Republicans have claimed
thousands of voter registrations nationwide to be fraudulent,
largely among minority communities. Democrats responded that the
registrations are largely legitimate. Conscientious people should
approach this issue with facts, not ideology. Since it appears most
charges of fraud are exaggerated, supporting a citizen's right to
vote is not a partisan act. Instead, both Democrats and Republicans
should sidestep party lines and stand up for democracy.
