The Badger men's hockey team (3-2-1 WCHA, 6-3-1 overall) played
hard when it mattered as it rallied from behind two nights in a row
and emerged unbeaten in its series with the two-time defending
national champion Minnesota Gophers (1-6-1, 2-7-1).

Something odd is unfolding in the Japanese toy industry. The
country's declining birthrate is leading to a corresponding
decrease in its traditional clientele-children.

With the passage of a bill prohibiting gay marriage in Wisconsin
and controversy bubbling in the Anglican church over New
Hampshire's newly installed gay bishop, Wayne Besen's Madison
appearance seems especially timely.

The Wisconsin men's soccer team (1-3 Big Ten, 9-8 overall) took
out their second non-conference foe in eight days as they defeated
the DePaul Blue Demons (7-8, 3-2 Conference USA) by a score of 2-1
at home last night. The win put the Badgers over .500 for the
fourth time this year and also snapped a 3-game winning streak for
the Blue Demons.

In the Badgers' upcoming battle against Northwestern this
Saturday, junior quarterback Matt Schabert will not only have to
prove himself worthy of a starting nod to the fans and coaches, but
more importantly he will have to obtain the confidence of his
teammates.

Two days after a disheartening 26-23 loss to then-No. 15 Purdue,
Head Coach Barry Alvarez announced senior quarterback Jim Sorgi
will not play in this weekend's game against Northwestern, with
junior Matt Schabert starting in his place.

Someone please pinch me because I think I might be dreaming. I
need someone to verify that the fireworks I saw Saturday night
above the north end zone were not an illusion. And that the picture
ingrained in my mind of the scoreboard reading BADGERS 17, BUCKEYES
10 with all of Camp Randall singing Varsity was more than a
dream.

Great opportunities come around once in a long while, and the
Wisconsin football team made the most of an opportunity Saturday
night as they knocked off the defending National Champion Ohio
State Buckeyes 17-10.

If last Sunday's come-from-behind-thriller of a win was a sorely
needed victory for the Wisconsin Badgers women's soccer team (2-4-0
Big Ten, 6-6-1 overall), this Friday's match against Iowa (0-5-1,
3-8-1) in Iowa City can hold no less significance.
(10/06/03 6:00am)
After jumping out to a 5-2-1 record, the Wisconsin women's
soccer team looked poised for success and had high hopes for the
rest of the Big Ten season. But after dropping their next three
games, the Badgers found themselves in desperate need of a win as
they played host to conference rivals Illinois (7-2-1, 3-1) and
Northwestern (6-5, 2-3) this weekend.

\American Splendor"" comes with its own disclaimer, provided in
a voiceover by its dismal and thoroughly-if not depressingly-real
protagonist, Harvey Pekar. ""If you're the kind of person looking
for romance or fantasy or escapism,"" Pekar remarks, ""you've got
the wrong movie.""

Coming into Saturday's annual Cardinal-White spring scrimmage
game, Wisconsin Head Coach Barry Alvarez had a lot of questions
about his football team.

With a 4-13 record and the modest position of 10th in the Big
Ten, it would seem that Wisconsin's men's tennis team has little
fuel for optimism. However, silver linings abound for the Badgers,
who charge down the stretch in the best shape of their conference
season. Before dropping a match to No. 12-ranked Minnesota last
weekend, the young team snapped a 10-game losing streak with a
convincing win over Iowa.

Although five seniors said farewell Saturday, the men's hockey
team ended its tumultuous season on a sour note. Wisconsin (7-17-4
Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 13-21-4 overall) simply
could not produce against a stronger, faster North Dakota team
(14-9-5, 24-9-5), falling 5-2 Friday and 5-0 Saturday.
(03/04/03 6:00am)
It is win or go home for the No. 6 UW women's hockey team, and
the Badgers (14-6-4 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 21-7-5
overall) find themselves preparing to take on a familiar
foe.

The mayoral candidates have been hitting the streets campaigning
for votes in the upcoming primaries. With the primary Feb. 18, two
names seem the most recognizable to voters, current Mayor Sue
Bauman and former mayor Paul Soglin, because they have both held
the office before.

The University of Wisconsin men's basketball team (6-3 Big Ten,
16-5 overall) is set to take on the Michigan State Spartans (5-4,
13-8) Tuesday at the Kohl Center, in the teams' only regular season
meeting.

Kids these days just don't know anything. I base this statement
solely on the one thing that should always unite a generation of
children all across America: cartoons. And not cable cartoons,
network cartoons. Children can grow up in different environments,
with different circumstances, but they all watch the same cartoons.
There is no good reason a child should get up at 7 a.m. on a
Saturday except to sit down on the couch and vegetate for five
straight hours.
