As the Republican primaries slowly reveal Mitt Romney as the obvious contender for the United States presidency, focus on the economy is off the backburner and has found itself being touted again as a serious national issue. Social conservatism glib talk has hopefully made its exodus with the likes of Rick Santorum. Social issues have distracted discussion of issues such as jobs and the economy, issues more pressing and of far more importance than almost anything else being spouted about during the height of the debates.

It’s no secret that the sport of hockey has a concussion problem on its hands. From youth all the way up to professional ranks, the injury is becoming more prevalent as the sport is played at an increasingly faster and more physical pace. That is what hockey fans pay to come to the rink and watch, but at what price?

Looking slightly awkward as he came to the stage, and continuing that same awkwardness through his speech, Rick Santorum rounded out the schedule of GOP front-runners.

Newt Gingrich supporter and lifetime Green Bay resident Marilyn Aevischer had the opportunity to have a picture taken with Gingrich prior to the upcoming Wisconsin primaries. Aevischer said she's a Republican and has been all her life and when asked about her support for Gingrich she said "I think he's the smartest of the four," (referencing the four candidates for the Republican nomination, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich).

Republican legislatures across the country recently issued a more stringent requirement to vote. A government-issued identification such as a driver’s license or a passport must be presented at the polling station to receive a ballot. I find it interesting that today’s Republican Party, which is largely composed of self-identified conservative members, so often sees fit to push forward big government initiatives and they always have excuses to justify their actions. On war they point to the great threat of terrorism, on marriage they point to moral values and the church, on the bank and auto bailouts they cite the inevitable collapse of the American economy. I think the series of voter ID laws passed under Republican state legislatures also fit nicely into this category of big government interventionism.

The twisty race for the Republican presidential nomination now
finds itself with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in the
lead, ready to take the fight to President Barack Obama. He
recently launched into a tirade against Obama, chiding the
president's policies protecting the environment as based on a
theology that has nothing to do with the Bible. Apart from being
interpreted as an attack on Obama's faith by the media, it also
makes one ponder what Santorum bases his opinions.

The Republican Party is in disarray. For the first time ever,
three different presidential candidates have won the first three
primaries of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, and the GOP
establishment has become worried that Former Gov. Mitt Romney,
R-MA, whom they presume to be their most electable candidate, may
not obtain the nomination. For the past year, primary voters have
been resisting Romney by switching from one conservative
alternative to another, including ridiculous fringe candidates like
Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-MN, and Herman Cain.
