When Newt Gingrich triumphantly challenged President Obama to seven, three-hour Lincoln-Douglas style debates in early December, the prospect appeared to coincide with his image as the intellectual Republican candidate. Yet since his impressive performances in GOP debates, the professorial Gingrich appeal has tapered significantly. His disappointing fourth-place finish in the Iowa Caucus-due, in part, to a horde of negative advertisements in the state-shattered any hopes of the utopian, debate-based primary Gingrich desired. A strong showing in Florida could give a jolt of energy to his candidacy, but with a limited war chest and reservations about his personal life, Gingrich would best avoid buying new milk.

As the holiday season rolls around, religious tensions are sure
to follow. Just a month ago, Gov. Scott Walker ignited a slight
controversy by calling Madison's holiday tree a Christmas tree in a
press release (because pine trees were an irreplaceably sacred part
of Jesus' birth in the middle of a desert and have been key
throughout 2000 years of subsequent Christian tradition). As you
can tell, this particular issue seems quite petty. However, it
signals a more important problem: America's inability to properly
recognize the separation between church and State and the
consequences the joining of the two bring.

The Republican primary season is certainly going to be
interesting, if the preceding months are any indication. However,
most people are going to draw the wrong lessons from it. It is true
that the polls have fluctuated because there is no clear
frontrunner. But the conclusion most draw from this—that there is
no frontrunner because the field is weak—is almost certainly wrong.
On the contrary, the Republican base’s problem is that its
candidates are too strong.

Back in high school, a classmate asked me with a straight face:
“What country is the Tour de France in this year?” I was
dumbfounded. I told her it only happens every four years, but next
time it will be in either England or Great Britain; I couldn’t
remember which one. Although I expected this girl to get a negative
number on her ACT, she somehow goes to UW-Madison (and she’s
actually smart, believe it or not).

Head coach Mike Eaves has said all season long that it is a
“process” with this year’s young Wisconsin men’s hockey team (4-7-1
WCHA, 5-8-1 overall), and after getting swept on the road by
Colorado College, the team will have plenty to look at and grow
from as they return home to face Mercyhurst (5-1-1 Atlantic Hockey,
6-5-1 overall) this weekend.

In 2012, presidential candidates are expected raise and spend
approximately eight billion dollars in campaign contributions, an
increase of 20 percent from the 2008 election.President Barack
Obama alone is expected to raise about one billion dollars for his
campaign, and don’t expect that money to come from teaching unions
or the ACLU; despite Obama’s promise of liberal change, his 2008
campaign accepted more money from the financial sector than anyone
in history.

The fact that two of the year's most highly anticipated hip-hop
albums share a release date invites a certain amount of comparison
of both the artists and their music.

The Madison Symphony Orchestra, housed in the Overture Center

the country, and lucky for UW students, it is welcoming Badgers

respective quotations. Here are the answers:

The Republican primaries have been very exciting lately. Herman
Cain, a relatively unknown candidate, won the Florida straw poll
last week following a debate the night before. Ron Paul, R-Texas,
continues to poll well and collect lots of money from individual
donors. Texas Governor Rick Perry, in a matter of weeks, has become
a frontrunner (if not the frontrunner),
outpolling the significantly more established Mitt
Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts.

The combination of his performance at last week's Republican debate
and the recent Florida ""President 5"" straw poll exhibited the
problems facing Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry. This
challenge comes despite the early promises of an energetic campaign
that began, essentially, with a 30,000-person prayer rally at
Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Wale (pronounced ‘wall-lay') made a name for himself in the hip-hop
community by representing his Washington, D.C. roots,
but, with his impending sophomore album release and promotional
tour, wants to leave his hometown behind as he attempts to make a
name for himself in the trap music scene.

As students scan the classroom for an empty seat, one person tends
to stick out. Usually quietly seated in the back row, this person,
who could pass as many of the students' grandparent, eagerly awaits
to learn from UW-Madison professors free of charge.

With the race for the Republican presidential nomination heating
up, the past few weeks have seen extensive campaigning and
passionate debates that have shed more light on the contenders.
Watching contender U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann,
R-Minn., is like revisiting the 2008 presidential
election.

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was giving a speech, to show their
discontent with his deficit plan.

As much as I am in support of teachers having collective bargaining
rights, I don't think now is the time for educators to go on
strike. Education is not an elastic issue, and teachers have a
social responsibility to keep schools running. Civil disobedience
does not work by ignoring the most vulnerable individuals in our
society. And a strike points to a neglect in education which does
nothing to prompt a proper solution.

Wu-Tang is forever. After almost 20 years of classic New York City
rap and hip-hop, Raekwon is taking the name Shaolin vs.
Wu-Tang for his fifth studio album, bearing in mind the
martial arts film that inspired the Wu-Tang Clan to come up with
their group name. Bringing back the soundbites from the film that
were ever-present on the Wu's debut album in 1993, Shaolin vs.
Wu-Tang keeps Raekwon true to his roots.
