After falling 26-12 to Minnesota in early February, the
Wisconsin wrestling team's Big Ten record dropped to 2-3. As the
Badgers head to Bloomington, Ind., for the conference tournament
this weekend, that slump seems like decades ago.

An outbreak of an equine herpes virus has struck horses owned by
the UW-Madison Hoofers riding club, imposing a quarantine on a barn

This week several European newspapers reprinted offensive
cartoons of Mohammed from Denmark's Jyllens-Posten that were
originally published on Sept. 30, 2005. Crude cartoons met crude
reactions: Muslims in Beirut, Dubai and Damascus burned all things
Danish; Iraqis, Indians, Indonesians and Iranians rallied; Hamas
called for executions; and NATO soldiers killed Afghan rioters.
Clearly, free expression'whether in Jyllens-Posten, Washington
Post, or The Daily Cardinal'can be offensive. Fittingly, the
Vatican commented: 'The right to freedom of thought and expression
cannot entail the right to offend the religious sentiment of
believers.' But the Holy See's idea is wrong. Freedom of thought
and expression must entail the freedom to offend.

Everyone loves a great sports story. Tales of overcoming
seemingly-impossible odds are enjoyable. Just think of Daniel E.
'Rudy' Ruettiger. But some sports stories are not so magnificent.
Those stories often tell accounts of potential that was not met and
tragedy that ensued thereafter.

Freshmen descended on the university in droves this year,
putting pressure on admissions to tighten enrollment and raise
standards for next year.

Often two films with extremely similar subject matter will come
out at the same time, and the inevitable comparisons that result
can drastically alter how each is received. This is more of a trend
among critics than audiences'actual turnout doesn't shift
dramatically'but when one of the films is much better than the
other, negative reactions to the lesser movie can be exaggerated
and detrimental. For example, the marginally entertaining 'Dante's
Peak' seemed awesome solely because it came out a few months after
the truly horrible 'Volcano.'

Madison police declared a gathering on State Street an unlawful
assembly early Sunday morning and cleared the crowd with officers
in riot gear and pepper spray for the fourth consecutive
year.

Madison starts its weekend-long Halloween revelry this Friday,
with area officials urging participants to celebrate responsibly or
face 'strong action' in the future. While this warning may seem
standard, it is far from hollow. A similar celebration in Boulder,
Colo., where reckless behavior drove the city to discontinue its
Pearl Street Mall Crawl, could foreshadow the future of Halloween
in Madison.

While the old adage goes 'beer before liquor, never been
sicker,' recent nationwide sales of beer are also not as healthy as
they have been.

UW-Madison students serving among troops deployed for the
Hurricane Katrina relief effort spent the first two weeks of their
semester performing security operations in New Orleans rather than
going to class.

Why is it that the quality shows on network television are
usually cancelled just as they're hitting their stride? Apparently
witless twaddle like \Will and Grace,"" ""Dharma and Greg"" and
""Ally McBeal"" can fester and stink up the tube for years on end,
yet all-around-wonderful shows like ""Freaks and Geeks and
""Undeclared"" (from ""40-Year-Old Virgin"" director Judd Apatow)
can't even make it through one season.

Prime time television lost its virginity in 2005. After years of
abstaining from airing condom ads during peak ratings, the major
networks aired a prime time Trojan commercial. The new \Make a
Difference"" campaign intends to decrease the incidences of STDs
and HIV/AIDS by encouraging sexually active men and women to use
protection. Awareness of HIV/AIDS must be raised, but the message
should not come packaged in a Trojan horse.

After a quite enjoyable summer, I noticed the most peculiar
phenomenon. While people I knew returned as expected, a group of
unknown entities began appearing also. They appeared similar to my
friends, yet different, younger, smaller. With my curiosity piqued,
I did what any good engineer does; I forsook my social life and
spent countless hours in the first floor of Wendt constructing a
sturdy fort out of books.

Despite Washington's distance from Madison, the decisions handed
down from the U.S. Supreme Court have a lasting impact on our daily
lives. Only 50 years old, President Bush's nominee for Chief
Justice, John G. Roberts, could have a generational influence on
the course of American law and government. Womens' rights,
environmental concerns, the right to privacy and copyright issues
are likely to be prominent in future Supreme Court decisions and
are of importance to students.
