I was alone, watching a movie at the start of freshman year,
when the phone rang. The ordinary impulse would've been to pause
Reservoir Dogs"" and answer it, but this was the room phone, which
I had not come to think of as my own in the few days living with
it.

In our Summer Registration Issue 2008, The Daily Cardinal ran a
comic under the title The Graph Giraffe"" that some readers found
offensive and racist. The Daily Cardinal received questions
regarding the message of the comic, especially since it ran in the
issue that served to welcome family and friends of incoming
students. Although the artist's message was meant to neither harm
nor demean, it was poorly conveyed and was overlooked by Cardinal
management because of deadline complications and concerns.

As the year draws to a close, many seniors view the last days
before graduation as a checklist of last-minute things to
accomplish: Pick up robes and hat. Send out invitations. Pass the
last few exams. Get wedding dress fitted?

For some reason, I happened to stumble upon a website that
featured all of the national food holidays of our glorious country,
which has nothing better to do than officially declare my birthday
International Yorkshire Pudding Day (really?).

Possible university sanctions for the incoming senior class
president who allegedly stole bus tickets from Memorial Union
remain unclear as no official superior within the university could
be determined to account for his behavior.

Frightened Rabbit is just one more band to have emerged from
Glasgow, Scotland, but The Midnight Organ Fight should
propel them to the top of that list of notables. Their second album
release in under a year takes many of the elements they previously
established and energizes them with a lyrical delivery, percussive
punch and forceful guitar that all scream with desperation for
nearly the entire 50 minutes of work.

It's difficult to correct someone when you're not in a uniform.
Last week, walking down a path in Lakeshore Nature Preserve, the
blackbird calls were disrupted when a pair of tiny dogs took off at
full force, yapping insanely, in chase of a Canadian goose. As the
goose took umbrage and honked unprintable threats, the dogs circled
back toward their smiling owner, who urged them on. Luckily for the
dogs, who might otherwise have lost an eye or two, the goose
retreated and took flight.

There are a myriad of reasons why I'm hesitant to write about
Rev. Jeremiah Wright this week. Wright's comments have indirectly,
yet purposefully, become tied to Obama's campaign. This has not
been ethical, nor does it serve to foster the political discussions
this country so desperately needs at this point. There has been a
media saturation which, by far, has been sensational over
substantive.

A citywide pandemic is afoot. Blue men are roaming the streets.
These men do not have a blood disorder, nor are they aliens from
another planet (as far as we can tell). These creatures belong to a
touring rock performance group known as the Blue Man Group.

Sports fans that pick up a weekly newspaper and examine the
National League Central standings may be somewhat surprised at what
they see. Neither the Milwaukee Brewers nor the Chicago Cubs occupy
the top spot - that belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals - and both
squads are 8-6/9-5, respectively.

Tapes 'n Tapes' new album, Walk It Off, uses the
textbook formula for a sub-par follow up from an indie darling.
After their debut album, The Loon, received rave reviews from both
bloggers and mainstream media, they decided to change the formula a
bit in their sophomore album while attempting to keep their
original sound, leaving a CD that just seems like a typical indie
album.

Everyone handles stress differently. Some continually talk about
how much stress they have and then proceed to keep talking about
how much needs to be done instead of doing anything about their
stress, which results in a higher accumulation of stress.

As government agencies across Wisconsin anticipate budget cuts
in response to a shortfall projected at over $652 million, Gov. Jim
Doyle has requested legislative approval for an extra decimal point
to help reduce the size of the projected budget deficit.

Wyndham Manning is the best candidate to succeed Ashok Kumar as
the Dane County District 5 Supervisor. He is neither a great
candidate nor the lesser of two evils, but rather the better of two
mediocres.

After three days off, March Madness is back in full swing
Thursday with four regional semi-finals. However, fans will have to
wait until Friday evening for the matchups in the Midwest Region.
No. 3 seed Wisconsin and No. 10 seed Davidson hit the court first,
followed by No. 1 seed Kansas and No. 12 seed Villanova.

Head coach Roy Williams' Tar Heels hammered its first two
tournament opponents, scoring over 100 points in both games. By
doing so, North Carolina remains the top seed in a region, which
has only seen one upset. This should be good for the ACC champions,
but it also means all top four seeds are still alive in the
bracket.

Dear Mr. Screwtape,
(03/26/08 6:00am)
Welcome back, everyone. I assume many of you spent your breaks
working on your suntan in some exotic locale. Personally, I stayed
in Madison and watched snowfall top the century mark for the
season. I did, however, between my long-hibernation-style sleep
cycles find the time to watch a rather interesting episode of Real
Time with Bill Maher.""
