Further action against 2009 class pres. unclear

Possible university sanctions for the incoming senior class president who allegedly stole bus tickets from Memorial Union remain unclear as no official superior within the university could be determined to account for his behavior.

According to a criminal complaint, UW-Madison junior Oliver Delgado was charged with misdemeanor theft for taking bus tickets without consent the week before Spring Break to travel to Chicago's O'Hare airport. At an initial court appearance April 21, Delgado plead not guilty to the charge.

I think it's disappointing,"" Brittany Wiegand, current chair of Associated Students of Madison's Legislative Affairs Committee, said of Delgado's actions.

Wiegand said she was unsure of what would happen regarding Delgado's position.

""Senior class officers are not part of ASM,"" she said. ""They don't have any rules or policies or anything like that.""

Delgado was elected to his future position in early April during the ASM spring elections. Wiegand said the senior class officers are put on the ASM ballot only so they can be elected by the student body.

Wiegand said while senior class officers work with the secretary of the faculty, ""they don't report to anyone.""

Many ASM Student Council representatives also said at their meeting Monday they were unsure how to handle the situation. Jeff Wright, senior class president runner-up and current ASM Student Council representative, refused to comment Tuesday.

John Lucas, a University Communications spokesperson, said the Office of the Dean of Students does not provide oversight to to the senior class officers.

""Dean of Students reviews every alleged case of student misconduct for potential application of the judicial code,"" Lucas said. ""Sanctions could range anywhere between a letter to expulsion in extremely rare cases.""

Neither Delgado nor Secretary of the Faculty David Musolf returned phone calls as of press time Tuesday.

Delgado is scheduled to appear in court May 30.
