""I am so / I am so / Out of tune,"" Jeff Tweedy sang at a solo
acoustic set he performed as a rogue while recording Yankee
Hotel Foxtrot, simultaneously turning it into a lamentation of
personal, professional uncertainty. Overall, its directness is so
mysterious, ambiguous and genuine it discomforts and reassures at
the same time. Despairingly crying out in self-awareness, Tweedy
emotes a candidness that only a Ditch Trilogy-era Neil Young would
be bold enough to pull off, calmly finishing the stanza, ""With
you.""

After a week out of league play, the No. 16 Wisconsin men's
hockey team jumps back into WCHA action this weekend with a home
series against the Michigan Tech Huskies. After splitting series
the last two weekends, the Badgers (5-4-1 WCHA, 8-5-1 overall) look
to gain ground in the conference standings, with four points up for
grabs. The Huskies come to Madison with a record of 3-9-0 (2-8-0
WCHA) and find themselves in the basement of the league.

The Vending Oversight Committee gave initial approval to a new
vending area that would prohibit vending in certain downtown areas
at Wednesday's meeting.

Wow, what a sad, strange day Thanksgiving turned out to be.
First, readers had to endure the lack of a column from yours truly,
and then poor Tiger Woods had a little incident with his car. Now
the details are sketchy, but as of now we only know that Tiger
crashed his car backing out of his driveway at 2:30 in the morning,
which led to his wife smashing out the vehicle's window with a golf
club to allegedly ""save"" him. Sounds a bit strange, so I decided
to reflect on the topic in greater detail below:

After I read the article ""Race deserves no place in university
admissions"" in Tuesday's issue of The Daily Cardinal, I struggled
with how to explain the intent of the author. I was caught wholly
off-guard by the call for an end to affirmative action.

Until last Sunday, one man save Brett Favre was the most
talked-about person in the state. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett kept
his mouth shut about his campaign until relatively late in the 2010
gubernatorial race, yet has received more free press than either
Republican candidate.

When the Michigan Wolverines take the field at Camp Randall
Stadium Saturday, they won't be looking to shore up a resume for a
BCS berth or gearing up for a dynamic rivalry game with Ohio State.
No, on Saturday they will be fighting for their first FBS win since
September and their best chance for bowl eligibility.

Political satires have a tendency to be misleading. Often they
lure unsuspecting audiences in with the promise of a few good yuks
and then beat them repeatedly over the head with an agenda-laden
mallet, ultimately weighing them down with a humor too dark to be
truly enjoyed. ""The Men Who Stare at Goats,"" the directorial
debut of Grant Heslov, co-writer of ""Good Night and Good Luck,""
is not that kind of satire. Although it is a bit messy at times,
""The Men Who Stare at Goats"" presents, but does not force, its
antiwar stance, all the while never sacrificing the levity and
humor that make it so enjoyable to watch.

In 1999, Wisconsin finally made the fifth offense for driving
while intoxicated a felony. Even with this stipulation, our state
still had some of the most lax drinking laws in the country at the
time. Even though the state Legislature recently tightened drunken
driving laws, the latest legislation passed will do little to
reduce Wisconsin's reputation as an overly alcohol-friendly
state.

So last week's decrying of Lil Jon was fun, but a ranting column
like that is not very productive without alternatives and guidance,
so running it concerned me and got me thinking.

In 1892, William Wesley Young, a native of Monroe, Wis., had the
radical idea to found an independent daily student paper. While
dailies were not without precedent at other universities on the
east coast, it was a first for a campus whose only experience with
student journalism had been through weekly and monthly literary
publications.

Lil Jon is set to release his first solo project Nov. 24,
entitled Crunk Rock. Why should anybody care? The short
answer is you should not care nor pay it any attention, yet people
will. Maybe even a lot of people, which makes me curious.

For the most part, people in my age bracket (""20-somethings"")
look at elderly people—anyone over the age of 40, maybe 50 if they
have aged well—as a completely different species.

The last time I paid to watch a sporting event was last summer
to watch the Brewers play. One of the best things about Miller
Park, despite the inflated prices, is the stadium always allowed
fans to carry in whatever snacks they might have brought from home
to enhance the experience. Fans' bags were inspected on arrival,
and upon entrance attendants observing that Mr. and Mrs.
Baseball-Fan had nothing more than peanuts and sunflower seeds in
their bags, they were allowed in.

Alcohol policy in Madison is rarely simple, straightforward or
one-size-fits all. Any proposed policy must be thoroughly vetted in
terms of its impact on students, bar owners, police and the general
community. This is a city that demands public participation in such
decisions and should not be one that unfairly singles out a
particular constituency for inappropriate burdens on personal
rights.

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have infiltrated
practically every part of our society, sports coverage included. To
date, Facebook holds more than 300 million active users worldwide,
while Twitter receives roughly 55 million users per month. It comes
as no surprise, then, that not just fans and organizations, but
also athletes and coaches have begun participating in this
trend.

As any veteran of a Madison Halloween will attest, the most
commonly seen costume among female college students is some
variation on a ""sexy profession"" theme. Though the costumes
themselves are largely a non-issue, the judgment that many young
women receive, especially by their fellow females, reflects a
society fraught with fear of the expression of female
sexuality.
