I know I'm jumping the first-anniversary gun or maybe just
missing the farewell boat by the better part of a year, but a
career of such transforming polarizations is beginning to complete
its form for me. Michael Jackson transcended cultural and artistic
barriers, which has been conflicting a large majority of the
general populace since the beginning of his career. Reflecting on
the last year, the last pieces of his career have fallen securely
into a safe place for him, as his death has prompted a 360-degree
turn among fans. Just a year ago, most saw him as an alleged
pedophile who had become more deformed than the zombies in his
""Thriller"" video from 30 years ago. However now that he has
passed, somehow the dark secrets in his closet are forgotten
entirely while everybody stands in awe of the glistening garments
that masked his vices and drew roaring applause throughout his
career.

After record participation in the 2010 spring election, the NAT
is down. Following weeks of intense debate the University of
Wisconsin's student body voted down the ballot initiative that
would renovate the Natatorium and add about 54 dollars to student's
segregated fees in the future. The proposed facility would have
everything from an all-purpose indoor turf facility to expanded
fitness areas. The upgrade may certainly be a worthwhile proposal,
but as many on this campus would never see nor pay for these
renovations, it's not hard to see why it failed to pass.

Former Governor Tommy Thompson has neither confirmed nor denied
a potential bid for the U.S. Senate race against U.S. Sen. Russ
Feingold, D-Wisconsin, but will announce his decision Thursday at
a Tea Party rally in Madison.

First it was New Era. Then it was Russell. And this past Friday,
Chancellor Biddy Martin decided to drop yet another contract with
an athletic apparel company—Nike. The reason: Nike neglected to
reimburse Honduran factory workers for $2 million in unpaid wages.
The hope: By dropping the contract, UW-Madison will force Nike to
reconsider its abhorrent labor practices. However, no matter how
much financial weight UW-Madison may carry, it is nowhere near
close enough to effect real change in Nike's labor policies.

In an attempt to curb the number of car break-ins in Madison,
the Madison Police Department announced Thursday it will begin to
issue report cards to vehicles on the north side.

If you ask any kid what the best exotic pet to have is, they
would probably answer with something like a snake or a lizard.
These kids would be on the right path, but according to Dreamworks'
new film, ""How to Train Your Dragon,"" when it comes to reptilian
pets, the bigger the better.

Now that Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils have cut down the
nets, the 2009-'10 NCAA men's basketball season has finally come to
an end. As a Badger fan already looking ahead to the 2010-'11
campaign, one of my favorite parts of discussing Wisconsin
basketball in the off-season is speculating next year's starting
lineup; who will replace the seniors from this season and how
players may fare facing the potential of an expanded role. So
here's an early look at the potential starting lineup for UW for
next season.

On Monday night, the Student Services Finance Committee of the
Associated Students of Madison approved two major ASM bylaw
changes. Unfortunately, neither student newspaper has covered this
story in depth. But most students would be pissed to know the
circumstances.

Athleticism is not really my thing. I can't run fast. I can't
catch. And throwing isn't really my strong point either. In high
school I was a swimmer—a good one, thank you very much—because
swimming is the only sport that doesn't require any one of the
three previously mentioned talents. And I was a cheerleader. But
that had more to do with wanting access to both the football and
basketball teams on a daily basis.

The Madison Initiative for Undergraduates, the program raising
tuition by $250 for in-state students and $750 for non-resident
students, has the potential to decrease class sizes in bottle-neck
courses and add much-needed faculty in high-demand areas. However
the reality is that of the 114 proposals submitted to receive a
portion of the MIU funding, only 31 were recommended to Chancellor
Biddy Martin by the MIU Shared Governance Oversight Committee and
the Student Oversight Committee.

War is hell and hell is other people, so it makes sense that the
most hellish part of war isn't necessarily fighting the opposing
forces but working with the people who are supposedly on your side,
as seen in the controversy surrounding the war in Iraq. The whole
situation has since developed a very nefarious ""Bourne"" movie
tone to it with all of the unsavory intelligence wheeling and
dealing that went on behind the scenes. As such, it should have
been a given that ""Bourne"" series director Paul Greengrass and
Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon, would team up to tell that story
in ""Green Zone.""

Because of recent events, specifically The Badger Herald
allowing an online ad to run that links to a website denying the
Holocaust, I want to take the opportunity to make clear The Daily
Cardinal's advertising policies.

Buddy cop films often get a bad rap. In an art form that almost
requires constant re-invention in order to remain relevant and
engaging, anything tried and true like the buddy cop formula can
seem like it is yesterday's news. But oftentimes old comedy tropes
can be as hilarious as any edgy new trick on the block, especially
when they feature comedians in their prime who can make the
material feel fresh. This could have been the result in ""Cop
Out,"" a collaboration between slacker generation spokes-director
Kevin Smith and current comedy golden boy Tracy Morgan. Sadly,
""Cop Out"" instead proves that neither Smith nor Morgan can light
Twitter afire with LOL comments unless nestled in his comedy
niche.

February is National Eating Disorder Awareness Month. A variety
of different eating disorders (EDs) exist, each with common warning
signs. Of course, every individual varies, so this particular list
of symptoms is neither comprehensive nor exclusive. However, these
habits are typical among those suffering from an ED and increasing
awareness of these common signs will hopefully help contribute to
continued intervention and treatment of EDs.

It's time for me to level with you, dear reader: I really don't
