Last week, the university provoked another series of racial
tensions across campus. Following an e-mail sent to several
UW-Madison minority student organizations from the office of the
Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Climate, many students were
incensed at the administration's lack of tact.

Why did we need this movie? After last year's ""The Taking Pelham
123,"" did director Tony Scott need to prove to us again that he
can't make an entertaining train movie? Did Denzel Washington need
to cement his recent career in mediocrity with his second film for
Scott? Did Chris Pine need to kill the positive buzz surrounding
his latest performance as Captain Kirk in ""Star Trek""? Scott's
latest film ""Unstoppable"" is uninteresting, unpleasant and
unfortunate.

Quite frankly, I don't care what the Vikings do, on or off the
field. I don't bleed purple, nor do I root for the downfall of the

I have never walked out of a movie before. Generally, two hours
spent watching the most poorly made movie is a more pleasant
experience than the best two hours spent wasting time at home. In
order for me to even consider abandoning the theater, a movie would
need to transcend badness and connect with me on a truly offensive
level. That is the situation I ran into with ""Saw 3D,"" a movie I
would have skipped out on without regret had I not been bound by my
movie critic duties.

In 1983, Kenny Waters was convicted of the murder of Katharina Brow
in Ayer, Massachusetts. In the 18 years that followed, Kenny's
sister, Betty Anne Waters, dedicated her life to fighting for his
freedom. Determined to free her brother from what she believed a
wrongful conviction, Betty Anne went through college and law school
in order to eventually exonerate her brother. This remarkable true
story of personal sacrifice is illustrated in Tony Goldwyn's
""Conviction.""

Tragedy struck three friends visiting UW-Madison Junior Lance
Davies Saturday night, after the three boys from the University of
Minnesota mistakenly assumed The Red Shed is a bar where one can
have a decent time. Davies and his friends Mark Peters, Kale
Donahue and Jack Foster were playing beer pong and pre-gaming at
Davie's apartment at approximately 10:45 p.m. when Davies received
a call from his girlfriend Sammy Jones.

be reprimanded for sending an offensive e-mail to two students in
late September.

It is not too often that I actually drive my car around campus or
even drive my car in general. Most of the time it serves as a
resting place for leaves or something for snow to bury. It's just
another thing I inadvertently waste my money on. In high school I
actually got my driving privileges revoked due to the fact that I
totaled two cars in one year, racked up the occasional speeding
ticket and may or may not have caused some fender-benders. And yes,
in the best stern Dad voice I can imitate, it is a ""privilege to
operate a vehicle, not a right."" You would think after five years,
two speeding tickets and three cars, I would trust myself to drive,
but I don't entirely do yet, nor should anyone else.

Saturday night's matchup at Camp Randall features a quarterback who
has set school records for career QB rating, ranks third among
active FBS quarterbacks in completion percentage and is 15-4 as a
starter. Oh yeah, the other guy is a Heisman trophy candidate.

I have a tendency to take things too seriously. I think that's a
prerequisite for being such a prick about something as fickle as
music. I devolve existential prerogatives out of mundane pop lyrics
and deconstruct melodies to be valued by their parts.

It's 3 a.m. on a school night and I hear a continuous thud against
the wall. The people who live above me are either A) hitting tennis
balls at an ungodly hour, B)unsuccessfully attempting to teach
their cat how to climb walls like Spider-Man, C) repetitively
banging their heads against the wall because they have a ten-page
paper due at 9 a.m. and they're still on page two (I mean, what?
That never happens…). But I have a sneaky feeling they're having
sex. Lots and lots of sex.

The LGBT Campus Center is launching Stop the Silence: LGBTQ
Anti-Bullying Campaign to address ongoing incidents in both
UW-Madison and broader communities. Bullying toward students
identified as LGBT, or those perceived to be, is a long standing
issue for students. While a number of LGBT students have committed
suicide in the last few weeks, this is by no means a recent
phenomenon, nor does it truly reflect the pervasiveness of bullying
that students face on a regular basis.

For a while now, No Age has captured the interest of many
indie-rock fans with their noisy punk music and notorious live
performances. However, the previous full-length releases from this
guitar-and-drums duo have consistently fallen short of what the
band seems capable of. Randy Randall's tendency to over-rely on
distorted feedback and Dean Spunt's less-than-trained singing voice
have stifled their previous efforts, although brilliant songs like
""Teen Creeps"" and ""Losing Feeling"" revealed a band full of
promise. On Everything in Between, that promise is
realized.

Choosing a beer is a lot like renting a movie, there are so damn
many and I would like to experience every one, but all I have is
ten bucks and one night. So I shop and I shop until I find a new
beer that looks worthy with the right price and finally I decided
on this friendly looking chap. At home I crack it open and think
and taste and enjoy.
