American politics seems to have undergone a sort of implosion in recent years. No, I’m not referring to the increased partisanship and extremism that has dominated the news for the past few election cycles. What I’m worried about is a reduction in the scope of our concerns.

Dear Alex,

Every once in a while, I like to get away from writing about college football. It’s not like there’s any shortage of storylines at this point, nor any shortage of opinions about those storylines, but let’s put that aside, just for these few hundred words.

Correction: The fifth paragraph of this article originally stated "He is Libertarian, meaning he does not think government should not interfere in issues like marriage, drugs and abortion." The article has been edited to reflect Paul's view that government should not interfere in those issues. We apologize for the error.

Earlier this summer, Wade Page opened fire at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek Wis. The first reporting officer, Lt. Brian Murphy, was shot 15 times before another officer brought Page down with a rifle shot to his mid-section. Footage from the officers’ dashboard cameras was released yesterday, allowing the curious to gain a more complete image of the grisly scene and the role the two officers played in ending the attack.

I had two Jameses on my mind this summer who (hopefully) bear no relation by blood and other family fluids. The first I could not escape: E.L. James, the author of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” I didn’t read the book, but I did hear a top-notch live reading by Gilbert Gottfried; it was delightful and bespoke eldritch abominations of the written language. The second I came quite voluntarily to: Henry James, the indomitable (and even to some English majors, a thoroughly frightening) prose maestro.

A few days ago, Maurice Sendak passed away at the age of 83. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe this will: he was the author and illustrator of “Where The Wild Things Are.” So suddenly this is a big deal, right? Monumental even.

The movie theater is an odd, unique place if you think about it, a remnant of a bygone era. Not just in the way they get us out of our house to take in a form of entertainment that could be readily consumed in the privacy and comfort of our own abode, but in the way that they are one of the last places where we willingly and voluntarily rest so much of our enjoyment upon the social courtesy of those around us. In the words of Scarlett O’Hara, it’s a matter of relying “upon the kindness of strangers.”

Strange, dangerous and even horrifying trends are nothing new to alcohol-crazed teens. The latest—using hand sanitizer to create a substitute for hard liquor—isn’t even surprising. After six teens from San Fernando Valley, Calif. were hospitalized in the past few weeks, doctors and authorities across the U.S. have taken it upon themselves to warn parents of the dangers of keeping hand sanitizer in their houses.

The great political divide between Democrats and Republicans lengthens as the sensationalized “war on women” finds its roots in misconstrued and poorly phrased assertions, growing into a monster of unexpected proportion. Women’s rights are incredibly important and the opinions of the female population are essential in today’s politics, but much of the news surrounding women’s rights is so morphed that it has become strictly propaganda.

With all of the mystique surrounding Ron Swanson, television’s favorite local parks department director, it can be easy to forget there is a human being behind that mustachioed representation of bacon-and-whiskey Americana. But a human being there is, one named Nick Offerman, who will be taking the stage at the Memorial Union Theater at 8 p.m. Wednesday as part of his American Ham tour.
