The Senate and President Barack Obama recently released separate, but fairly similar, outlines for immigration reform. Since immigration policy has been a dismal failure for multiple decades, it is an exciting prospect to see the federal government “fix the system.” Unfortunately, neither the Senate’s Gang of Eight proposal nor President Obama’s proposal will do anyone much good in the long run.

There is the echo of a snare drum rattling the speakers of someone in America that looks exactly like me. By looking like me, I mean a young Black man. There is a gas station somewhere in America that this someone will visit for fuel. Perhaps this someone has a friend or two with him. Perhaps the snare drum continues to roll as the vehicle is placed into park. Perhaps they all want some sort of snack to whet their appetites. Perhaps, here, the night hides light from us all.

I am not a very sensitive person, nor do I ever plan to be. I’m not the kind of person that cries during emotional movies and some may say I have a black hole where my heart should be. I simply respond by quoting the great Ron Swanson, “Crying is only okay in two places: funerals and the Grand Canyon;” both of which I have never experienced.

About a decade ago, the almighty National Football League looked like it was headed down a dangerous path. It was turning into a battle of big hits. An exaggeration, yes, but not far from where the league was going. ESPN used to throw together highlight reels of players head hunting, launching their 250-pound bodies at each other with the intent to knock guys out of the game. It is rare to see a sport with a main purpose of hurting the other team, but the NFL was certainly flirting with this notion.

Just as many people who partook in the Pepsi Challenge back in the day to see whether they could distinguish between the world’s two foremost colas, American citizens partook in the presidential election a few weeks back to decipher between two candidates whose political views may or may not be apparent to them. Often in life, people believe that they prefer one thing to another and hold steadfast in their perspective that they know that certain thing really, really well. However, after further investigation, their prior views are often reduced to absurdity.

With the Dec. 21 deadline for application rapidly approaching, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is on the brink of beginning its search for a proficient replacement to Interim Chancellor David Ward. As an editorial board and as students, we believe that it is necessary for certain qualities to be embodied by the incoming chancellor, whoever he or she may be.

I have encountered a fair share of Grinches in my day. You know, the people who scoff at Christmas lights strung the day after Thanksgiving and carp about how “The holiday season is just one more example of how consumer driven our country has become.” Not that I can entirely ignore the very real and very scary Americans of all ages who go mad as a hatter trying to find the latest and greatest Holiday Barbie for their niece and some Tinker Toys for the other tots (yes, I’m old and these are the only toys my almost-22-year-old ass is familiar with).

Fresh off its 74-56 defeat to No. 10 Florida in Gainesville, Fla., No. 22 Wisconsin (1-1 overall) will look to bounce back when it hosts Cornell (1-1) Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Three of the marquee games from college basketball’s opening weekend were scheduled outdoors on aircraft carriers. These games are scheduled right around Veterans Day and fittingly aim to honor the United States’ Armed Forces.

Most writing has a geographic locus—unless you’re reading Samuel Beckett, in which case, have fun crawling through the mud or shutting yourself up in a funeral urn or some other abstraction of the human condition. And even if the author steadfastly refuses to name locations, a story that takes place in some huge metropolis or sleepy village will always have some bearing on a real- life location.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—On an afternoon that featured feel-good stories and falling records, one fact carries more weight with the Wisconsin football team than any other.

This week holds a special significance for most of the students at the UW-Madison. I am no exception. For many of us, Tuesday will be the first time we can vote in a presidential election.

Recent gaffes from Republicans like U.S. Senate Candidate Richard Mourdock, who said that rape is “something that God intended to happen,” have brought the issue of abortion back into the media with less than two weeks before the presidential election. Former Gov. Mitt Romney, who originally said he would be “delighted” to sign a bill banning all abortions, has softened his stance in an attempt to pander to the women voters he so desperately needs to win the election. However, Romney still favors defunding organizations like Planned Parenthood and vows to repeal Roe v. Wade (1973) if given the opportunity.

In the Wisconsin football team’s ninth game last season, it lost a heartbreaker in Columbus, Ohio. Not only did freshman quarterback Braxton Miller throw the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds left, but the Badgers had lost on a Hail Mary just seven days earlier to Michigan State.

If you actually do something on Halloween night—if school isn’t crushing your soul at the moment—you might decide to do something topical. And topical on Halloween means something scary.

Precedent can be unkind to the young. Art, history, generations—these can be unseemly hanger-ons. And they are, to the extent that we buy into their more depraved aspects.

In a town like Madison, we do a lot of moving. Once we get tired of one place (or run out of rent money, let’s be honest), we’re off to the next shitty hole-in-the-wall apartment our parents kind of want to cry about when they visit. Considering how mobile we, as a student body, are, you’d think that we’d be used to it by now. I’ve found this is certainly not the case.

The bomb that hit the economy in 2008 left everyone with lighter pockets. The government took action and it appeared as though the worst of it was over; the situation soon took a turn for the worst.
