The holiday shopping season has officially begun, bringing in
the tidal wave of materialism and credit card debt Americans
lovingly refer to as the season of giving. Of course, not everyone
is thrilled with what the modern American Christmas has become. In
What Would Jesus Buy?"" we follow one such group, The Church of
Stop Shopping. While the documentary has entertaining footage of
the performance/activist group staging their own brand of protest,
the film falters when it comes to providing substantial facts and
other sources, making the film more of a sermon than a balanced
look at American materialism.

Following fierce protests from Moveon.org and thousands of its
own members, Facebook announced this weekend that it would not move
forward with the most egregious invasion of personal privacy in its
short history.

I've been fighting it all my life. I can tell what people think
when they look at me, but I can't help it - I'm a hick trapped in a
big city.

We live in a world that at times seems to be crumbling beneath
us, slowly suffocating from the pollution, wars and grinding
poverty that blanket much of the planet.

When David Fincher released ""Zodiac"" earlier this year, the
bar was raised for psychological crime dramas. ""Zodiac"" was
Fincher's best film to date, exhibiting a pitch-perfect atmosphere
of unsettling dread and undefined fear.

he received a consolation prize Wednesday as he was awarded the

Gov. Jim Doyle's plan to levy a tax on big oil without passing
on the cost to consumers seems to smell of political pandering, but
we feel it is justifiable to explore a tax on oil companies that
funds roads and schools.

Our generation is constantly accused of apathy. We don't vote,
we don't read the newspaper, we don't even call each other. We
prefer to sit around IMing. Others label our generation apathetic
like it's some kind of disease, and we can't even muster up the
energy or interest to come to our own defense. But here's the
question I want to put out there: Are we really apathetic, or are
we in fact just biding our time until things get bad enough to
merit action on a massive scale?

An economy is a system designed to maximize the benefit garnered
from resources that its component parts invest into it. And by the
sounds of the decisions regarding the sale of four record
companies' music, that benefit will for once be shared between
music sellers and consumers.

When UW-Madison's own ""The"" Evan Wettengal was asked what he
wants for Christmas, his reply was simple: children's toys. But no,
""The"" Evan doesn't want the kind that you buy in the toy aisles
at K-Mart. ""I want real toys, from real children,"" he said. So
""The"" Evan set up the new charitable foundation, ""Toys from
Tots"" which collects new and gently used toys for people, like
""The"" Evan, who just want children's toys for Christmas.
Suggestions include Lite-Brite, Legos, Hot Wheels, Cool Tools and,
of course, slinkies.

Blogging is increasingly becoming a commonplace Internet
activity, much like sending e-mail or shopping online. Few could
have predicted that this oddly named activity would have grown
seemingly overnight into a cultural phenomenon.

A lot of things seem to be coming to an end right now. Maybe
it's the season. First is the downfall of legendary mega-sized CD
chain Tower Records. I guess alongside Yankees pitchers' planes,
school shootings and a congressional pedophilia scandal, a company
bankruptcy isn't all that sexy, but it's a big deal for the music
industry and signals, as Dylan said, that the times they are
a-changin'.
