For a while Saturday afternoon I thought the events that had
transpired at the Kohl Center brought out nothing but the best this
university has to offer. Then I read this on Twitter:

After surviving a crucial road test at Iowa on Wednesday night,
Wisconsin (8-3 Big Ten, 18-5 overall) has finally set its sights on
taking down No. 1. With the anticipation as high as ever, the
undefeated Buckeyes will try to win in Madison for the first time
since Bo Ryan took over as UW's head coach in 2001.

How does society stop a murderer? In the wake of the shooting in
Arizona by Jared Lee Loughner, it leaves one perturbed by the fact
that some members of our society are suffering from mental
illnesses that may cause such violent behavior. Recently, there
have been drastic cuts in educational funding, including mental
health counselors in many schools across America. Michael
Fitzpatrick, the Executive Director for National Alliance on Mental
Illness ,issued a statement saying that although the likelihood of
violence from people with mental illness is low, ""Arizona, like
other states, has deeply cut mental health services. Arizona has a
broad civil commitment law to require treatment if it is needed;
however, the law cannot work if an evaluation is never conducted or
mental health services are not available.""

In the aftermath of the shootings in Tucson, Ariz., last week,
Americans of all races, ideologies, and creeds came together to
remember those who lost their lives and those who were still
recovering. President Obama called for prayer and reflection in a
moving speech shortly after the incident.

Within all of us exists an inner beast, one that pokes its snarling
head in moments of rage and greed. Most of us learn, for better or
worse, to suppress that monstrous instinct and act civilly. But for
others the creature refuses to be suppressed any longer, growing
like a cancerous tumor until the distinction between the person and
the animal within dissolves.

Immediately following the Badgers' 83-20 trouncing of Indiana last
Saturday, accusations of poor sportsmanship began to rain down upon
head coach Bret Bielema and his team.

While the North Dakota Fighting Sioux looked stellar on the ice in
a series sweep of the Badgers last weekend, the hardwood should
tell a completely different tale as the Badgers play host to North
Dakota Tuesday night.

Returning home on a cold, blustery day at Camp Randall, the No. 7
Wisconsin offense caught fire as UW cruised to an 83-20 victory
over the Indiana Hoosiers.

By the time junior third-string quarterback Nate Tice plunged into
the endzone on a 17-yard bootleg with 1:57 showing on the clock,
the only question that remained was whether 83 push-ups would be
too much for Bucky to handle.

As the Badger men's basketball team closed out their exhibition
season late this week, they begin preparations for their first
regular season game against Prairie View A&M this Sunday at the
Kohl Center. In previous seasons, Wisconsin has been able to
handle their opening game with ease, defending their home court
against a non-conference opponent in each of the past three
seasons.

Wisconsin men's basksetball closed out their exhibition slate in
style on Wednesday, cruising to a 93-59 win over Division II

Short of a visit from the nation's commander-in-chief, the buzz
surrounding Saturday's match between the No. 18 Wisconsin Badgers
(1-1 Big Ten, 5-5 overall) and the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes 2-0,
6-0) is as palpable as any campus event this year. With an evening
start, a national television audience and a top-ranked opponent in
the house, the atmosphere is sure to be electric from sun-up to
well past dark.

With most of the top teams in the nation facing sub-par conference
foes, the discussion of meaningful games is more diverse than ever
this week. A sell out crowd of scarlet and cream plan to husk Big
XII rival Texas down to size in Lincoln, Neb.; the flawless Auburn
Tigers, under the leadership of a junior transfer student, scheme
to oust the Razorbacks; the undefeated Spartans hope to remain
perfect as an underestimated Illini squad storms into East Lansing,
Mich. following their monumentous Big Ten upset last week; and
Iowa's tenacious defense looks to control Michigan's surging
offense in Ann Arbor, Mich. Even without the majority of top ranked
teams playing against stiff competition, this week still promises a
fair share of excitement and intrigue.

In a season filled with inconsistency on the offensive side of the
ball, the Badgers' football team has found a youthful surge
beginning to emerge through the first five games.

Injuries affect any football team over the course of a season, and
the Badgers have been no exception. Through the first three games
of the year the Badgers have sustained injuries to both of their
starting wide receivers, junior Nick Toon and senior David
Gilreath. In their absence, the team's other receivers have had to
fill the void in the passing game created by their injuries.

After last year's record of 10-3 in his first season starting,
senior quarterback Scott Tolzien looked poised to have a breakout
year behind center. However, a slow start with turnover troubles,
mental misques and an injured receiving corps has fans and
opponents alike wondering if Tolzien and the Badger passing game
will ever reach its full potential.
