If downloads were equivalent to album sales, OK Go's sophomore
album, Oh No, would have already gone gold. The irreverent band's
homemade, unofficial video for lead single \A Million Ways"" has
earned the band the kind of attention that no publicist can
create.

Although the official end of summer is still some weeks off and
hopefully we have at least two months before the large sheets of
ice move in, my tortured sinuses warn that it would be best to let
go of my sandal-wearing ambitions soon.

If something awful does not happen to the New Pornographers
soon, the Vancouver band just might exhaust all of the
complimentary adjectives in the modern indie rock lexicon. Catchy,
tuneful, infectiously cheerful even when they are not trying to be
and weird in the best, most agreeable way possible, A.C. Newman and
friends have risen to the top of the power pop ranks with nary an
unflattering remark to be heard.

Coming to college can be daunting. You have to share a room with
a stranger, take classes and make new friends-even worse than all
that, you have to adjust to the college music scene.

With finals rapidly approaching, coffee suddenly becomes more
important than Ramen noodles. Since State Street's coffee shops
will be filling up quickly next week, there are three shops south
of campus to be aware of. A group of Daily Cardinal food writers
checked out Muddy Waters, Indie Coffee and Electric Earth to see
what they had in the way of java.

Hailing from Boston, Mr. Lif and Akrobatik have each carved a
niche in the indie hip-hop circuit, creating quality music and a
solid fan base in the process. Of late, they have worked together
and, after combining with DJ Fakts One, have created The
Perceptionists. Though each individual group member brings his own
set of talents to the table, Black Dialogue is certainly greater
then the sum of its parts.

New Order's Waiting for the Sirens' Call might be one of the
most eagerly anticipated albums in recent memory. On one hand, the
old fans hoped the group could rediscover their electronica roots,
while indie hipsters looked for the source of a new wave revival.
The former will likely be pleased, while the latter will discover
that New Order is less accessible than most neo-New Wavers.

The Kills are suffering from an unfortunate and unwarranted
identity crisis. First of all, their name: no, they are not The
Thrills, nor are they The Killers. Next comes the composition of
their group: they are a male-female rock duo.

This Saturday, the UW student radio station, WSUM, will host its
annual all-day music festival Party In the Park. Starting at 11
a.m., James Madison Park will be filled with eager music
enthusiasts there to enjoy 16 bands, 11 DJs, community performance
groups and local vendors. There will be four stages to fill the
demand of this year's lineup. The coveted headlining act is

Dead.

Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River's fourth full-length release,
opens with a cover of Tim Hardin's \Black Sheep Boy"" and quickly
evolves into a thematic concept album of staggering skill.
Appropriating the emotion of Hardin's song, frontman Will Sheff
puts on a songwriting clinic, expanding the black-sheep theme into
a rollicking album of allegory and emotion.

It is a travesty among travesties. A trend is emerging as MTV,
VH1 and other stations use the only good music left not for their
prominent music videos, but for background music in shallow shows.

Do you realize that the best Indiana Jones surrogate seen in
recent years is Brendan Fraser? Let's just ponder the ramifications
of that for a moment.

One attractive aspect of the UW-Madison campus is the Terrace at
Memorial Union. It is a place for students relax with some friends,
drink a pitcher and when the weather gets warm, enjoy a bit of
music while the westerly breezes roll off Lake Mendota.

Regarding Death Cab for Cutie, there is a vile word lurking in
the background of the indie community. While those willing to utter
it publicly are fortunately few in number, many more wait in the
wings for the right moment to casually let it slip from their lips
over a cup of joe at a caf?? or some other hipster hangout. That
word is \sellout,"" and there is no more damning word in the indie
lexicon.

It was inevitable, I suppose. Spending five years somewhere
changes a person. Boys become men. Baby faces grow stubble.
Promising young scholars discover the joys of alcohol. But I never
anticipated the latest change in me. In my last semester of
college, it finally happened.

Whether or not you recognize either sadcore or dreampop as
legitimate musical subgenres, both of these compound adjectives
effectively describe the output of New York indie outfit Ida.
