Spring semester (a misleading title) brings about a series of unfortunate changes, including the blistering cold. Start breaking out the scarves, mittens and patagonia fleeces because winter is here. The days are getting shorter, the sun sparse and students are losing their battle with icy Bascom Hill. To combat these changes, we have to find ways to stay warm and keep our spirits up during the cold months. Here are some winter essentials that’ll keep you toasty and happy without breaking the bank.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … right? For students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and colleges across the country, this isn’t always the case. The beginning of the holiday season does not only usher in gift exchanges, holiday movie marathons and jamming out to Mariah Carrey’s, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat. “The most wonderful time of the year” also marks the beginning of the most dreaded time of the year: finals season.

Americans have slowly been coming to terms with the abuses of the criminal justice system. The horrific circumstances of George Floyd’s death last May sparked national protest, shifting the push to end qualified immunity — a rule that protects police officers from civil suits — from libertarian circles into the popular press and the halls of congress. The abuses of power documented in the Making of a Murder Netflix series shocked millions, and the work of the Innocence Project is widely known.

Since 2013, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s pace of revenue growth has underperformed, compared to peer schools. With state politics resulting in increasingly smaller shares of the university’s budget coming from the state, the university is looking to alternative revenue streams to make up for lost cash.

For the last week, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game” has dominated my life. My mother, sister and I attempted to dissect the tiniest details of the Korean survival drama for the entirety of an hour-long road trip. A friend and I discussed Halloween costume ideas, and then subsequently scoured Amazon for the now infamous green tracksuits that figure as key imagery of the show. At the beginning of a work call, my supervisor opened with, “Have you watched ‘Squid Game’ yet?”

Wisconsin will take the field once again at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, this time under the lights against Eastern Michigan, who beat St. Francis 35-15 last week. To capture their first win of 2021, the Badgers will need a better all-around performance than they displayed in the 16-10 loss to Penn State, but they must place particular emphasis on a few areas of their game.

A cornerstone Greek life tradition for UW-Madison sorority chapters is bid day. All the PNMs open their bid envelopes to find out their fated new ‘sisters’, which ends in either excited screams or destitute tears, after which the girls are told to “run home” to celebrate their newfound comradery.

Disclaimer: I fully recognize that this fruit is as low-hanging as it gets, and frankly, it feels like cheating for me to use it as Almanac material. But I had writer’s block, and my only other idea involved vivid descriptions of Ruth Bader Ginsberg banging Antonin Scalia in the Afterlife, so you’re welcome.

Since 1969, the Mifflin Street Block Party has been an annual tradition for UW-Madison students. While it originally began as an anti-war protest, one thing has been true for decades — it is an opportunity for students to get obliterated with their peers before getting ready for finals week. That is until the 2020 Mifflin Street Block Party was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Something appears to have been learned from the past year, as Mifflin was reportedly very tame this past Saturday.
