A great number of things have been going incredibly wrong
lately. It seems as if you can pretty much take your pick of
political, social and economic topics and find glaring faults
within any one of them; problems numerous enough to give fits of
consternation and depression to even the most optimistic among us.
The Washington echo chamber is up to the same old game using the
same old players. The entrenched Democratic old guard is trying to
flex their collective muscles and strong-arm an unwilling president
who would prefer to play a different game. The decimated Republican
old guard is hawking tired party lines and ideologies; looking
left, right, north and south for fresh relief. Nothing is
happening, nothing is changing. Meanwhile, the blue and red
hamsters continue to run contently inside their wheels.

""Well, what kind of bathing suit are you getting?"" my mom
asked me on the phone, my eyes still sandy with sleep, as I was
walked late to my ""History of Rome"" class, late because I had
decided to get coffee. It was only early morning, and already my
mom felt the need to discuss spring break bathing suit shopping,
the only kind of shopping girls don't actually enjoy with their
usual unrestricted squeals of excitement, as they pick up and
examine a pair of delightfully glittery heels.

I sat alone in the darkness, waiting for the signal. The cool
wind whipped my hair and I cuddled deeper in my coat. Somewhere in
the night, coyotes were fighting. I waited impatiently.

I was all set to send my editors a column about sexual
fantasies. It was a good one, too. But you'll have to wait until
next week, and the reason you'll have to wait is because I am so
fucking pissed off.

""Today, education is perhaps the most important function of
state and local governments. Compulsory school attendance laws and
the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our
recognition of the importance of education to our democratic
society ... It is the very foundation of good citizenship ... In
these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be
expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an
education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to
provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal
terms.""

If you were one of the 36.3 million people nationwide who
watched the Oscars last week, you probably enjoyed the pleasant
(though predictable) ceremony. Hugh Jackman proved that you don't
have to be a comedian to get an audience laughing with his
theatrical renditions. James Franco and Seth Rogen teamed with
famed director of photography Janusz Kaminski to craft a bong out
of Kaminski's Oscars, while simultaneously crafting the funniest
skit of the entire show. Watching the two doobie brothers crack up
at ""The Reader,"" then hit uncomfortable silence as Franco watched
himself make out with Sean Penn was good for some genuine
giggles.

I still cannot help but shake my head every time I watch any
game that involves Ohio State and the television camera squares up
on the ridiculous head of Brutus the Buckeye.

Im standing in the produce section on a Thursday evening, having
made it only about 15 feet past the co-op's entrance, and am
anxiously running over my roughly 6,300 options while my right hand
drifts slowly back and forth over a bin of apples, like one of
those metal detectors employed by elderly men at the beach. I have,
through practice, learned to handle most of the grocery store
without too much trouble, largely by buying the same 20 or so items
each week while being careful not to overturn shelves of bee pollen
or whole wheat ginger snaps as I zip between my chosen brands of
breakfast cereal and tortilla chips in as straight a line as
possible.'""

I've always been the kind of person who lives to make jokes, and
often time the best jokes come at the expense of others. I'll be
the first to make fun of you for actually reading the Twilight""

Meets World"" re-runs (I mean, really?), and for still wearing
capris or scrunchies in public.

With the recession currently hanging over the heads of many
Americans, it is little surprise that several industries have gone
to the government to seek financial aid. However, are taxpayers the
ones who should be bailing out these companies and corporations for
their faulty business investments and poor financial planning? Or
has the recession taken a serious toll on these industries, forcing
them to plead for help from the American government? These
questions were on the minds of many when the American
automobile-making industry recently asked for federal assistance.
Shadows of this issue reappear as hospitals now look to the federal
and state governments for help. However, considering the current
plight of the taxpayer, the extraneous spending and the recent
surpluses in past years, hospitals should not expect a free ride
from the federal government in order to overcome their financial
woes.

A big 3-pointer splashed through the net to put the score at
67-66 and for a moment the scene was reminiscent of last year's
thriller between UW and the University of Texas. And then it all
went awry for the Badgers.
