Just a day after its setup, a living room tucked into a corridor outside of the Humanities building has attracted the attention of multiple passersby on University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus, including freshmen Olivia Gallenberger and Selia Salzsieder.
Twenty-five wooden desks sit in neat rows facing a blackboard covered in fragments of calculus equations, foreign words and declarations that “Erin was here,” all smeared and clouded by dust-saturated erasers. A clock hangs above the exit—a lagging reminder of the minutes remaining in class, while a teacher at the front drones to sleepy-eyed students.
Over a 38-year span from 1976 to 2013, Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan and his dad, Butch, attended every single Final Four.
On March 25, Legacy Recordings released Out Among the Stars, a full album comprised of 12 never-before heard studio recordings by the late Johnny Cash. The tracks were unearthed by Cash and June Carter’s only son, John Carter Cash, who said he found the recordings while browsing the family archives. The tracks were produced by Country Music Hall of Famer Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s in Nashville, Tenn. and were then shelved by Columbia Records.
On Friday I was lucky enough to see Billy Joel for the second time. The last time I saw him, it was a part of his 12-night run at Madison Square Garden—which involved some really sketchy counting as to how it was a 12-night run, but that’s neither here nor there. The last time I saw him, I was 11, and whatever Billy Joel songs I had heard were force-fed to me by my parents.
MILWAUKEE, Wis.—The ability to overcome adversity has boded well for the success of Wisconsin this season, and it proved true again Saturday night when its season was on the line.
With their 10th studio release, Georgia natives Drive-By Truckers stick to what they know best—Southern rock that sounds like it belongs on an abandoned train track. English Oceans, released March 4, creates a nice balance between alternating lead singers and co-founders Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley.
On their 13th release, Georgia natives Drive-By Truckers stick to what they know best—southern rock that sounds like it belongs on an abandoned train track. The group’s latest album English Oceans, released March 4, creates a nice balance between alternating lead singers and co-founders Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley.
When I was told I would be able to write a film column, I knew exactly what to write about—the soundtrack.
?Working as a Fitness Consultant and supervising the exercise spaces for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Recreational Sports, I get a firsthand look at the deteriorating facilities that are available for students and faculty here at the university. But it does not take an employee to see that these facilities are not meeting the demands of a university as prestigious as the University of Wisconsin.
“The Lake Living Room,” Lake Mendota’s newest sitting area has received a substantial amount of buzz from campus community members since its initial installation Sunday, an unintended consequence of what started out as a personal project between friends, co-creator of the “living room” Chelsi Zollner said.
Have you ever wondered what $1 million could buy? Yeah, of course you have. According to the Barenaked Ladies’ hit song “If I Had $1,000,000,” you could buy an exotic pet (yep, like a llama or an emu) furniture for your house (maybe a nice Chesterfield or an ottoman) or a fur coat (but not a real fur coat, that’s cruel).
Nashville band The Wild Feathers has had an unflagging career thus far; after forming in 2010, the band gained national prominence opening for Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, all before the release of their debut album, The Wild Feathers, in August 2013. Now engaging on their first headlining tour, this old-fashioned rock and roll band (as vocalist/acoustic guitarist Ricky Young preferred to label The Wild Feathers) is stoked to be on the road.
The Wisconsin men’s basketball team turned the tables on a talented Minnesota team that gave the Badgers a beating earlier this season in Minneapolis.
Neutral Milk Hotel has eked out a strange nook for itself in the annals of music history. And while In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has become a rite of passage at this point, their other albums have sort of fallen by the wayside. And by other albums, I mean two EPs and their first, On Avery Island.
A member of the Elephant 6 Recording Company in its mid-to-late ’90s heyday, Elf Power embraced psychedelic-tinged pop as its wheelhouse, much like fellow label mates Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control. Since the effective passing of the label, Elf Power has continued to churn out consistent, well-regarded albums and build a dedicated international fan base. Most recently, Elf Power has embarked on a national tour alongside former label mates Neutral Milk Hotel.
Ralph “Foster” Homily had listened to Yes’s Fragile back-to-back three times now, always savoring the tuneful dial-up guitar on “Long Distance Runaround.” It lent a certain order to the squalor of his room.
I have a confession to make: I still haven’t bought a NextGen console. You’re probably thinking, “Why the hell should I believe anything this guy says when he’s not even in the current generation!” Totally fair, but to be honest, any game that people may come close to deeming a “system seller” isn’t going to be released until 2014.
