Cage the Elephant brought a dynamic performance to the Sylvee on Oct. 17 and left the crowd speechless. From sharing special, intimate moments with the crowd to flashing lights and surround sound, Cage the Elephant came into Madison with an explosive energy that could not be contained.

It’s both hilarious and ridiculous that Cory Wong’s March 2 show at the Sylvee opens with the main theme of the “Halo” video-game soundtrack, an artifact of meme culture that’s circulated around so ironically that it was the last thing I expected to hear in a packed concert venue. Somebody standing behind me asked, “Is that what I think it is?”

Throughout music history, few bands and acts have been able maintain a level of consistent success as well as Breaking Benjamin has. Enduring its own share of struggles, founder/lead vocalist Ben Burnley has reorganized, assembling a new incarnation of the legendary hard rock group. Now a five-piece well-oiled machine, many fans, critics and even Burnley himself feel the band is heavier and more complete than in the past.

“Well ... that ain’t good,” the shooter proclaims of the bullet holes in his hat — and his forehead. Such morose writing would, in any other instance, draw breathless moviegoers to the edge of their seat; consistent to the directors’ natural flair, though, we need only laugh at the existential gag’s matter-of-fact delivery. Yes, Joel and Ethan Coen return to the big screen in Netflix’s (medium screen?) release of their newest film, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Tracing the independent anthologies of six vignettes in the American West with grit, irony, tongue-in-cheek humor and a varied cast of peculiar, well-spoken souls doomed to wander the duo’s gifted minds, the two-hour film demands multiple rewatches.

Swamped by midterms and essays? Did the beginning of Halloweekend hit you out of nowhere only to realize you don’t have a single costume? Never fear! Here are some quick and fun ideas from things that are likely already right in your closet.

Concerts are the closest thing to church I attend. I’ve noticed this in the stories I’ve written about shows, almost always making comments like “I think *insert artist name here* and the heavenly lights were summoning me to the afterlife.”

The conversation about climate change has left young people disengaged and disenfranchised from the larger conversation surrounding the topic, according to climate activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez.

Prosperity and joy were felt around the world this morning after God, creator of the heavens and the earth, remembered his cell phone passcode following a multi-millennia lockout.

Aliens invaded Madison and overwhelmed human forces Sunday, forcing a group of Marines to secure ammunition and a satellite feed to drive off the enemy. After a series of efforts to deal with the subsequent zombie invasion, the Marines discovered a possible cure and hope to distribute it Thursday.

Students on college campuses have relied on the same crop of multiplayer games to provide enjoyment for what seems like forever now. “Mario Kart,” “Mario Party” and various sports games are always excellent staples, but there’s been a movement afoot in the PC space to create a greater emphasis on local couch co-op. Rather than battling some folks around the world in “Halo”, why not take a trip to yesteryear and enjoy rubbing defeat in your buddies’ faces while they sit next to you.

I have a confession to make: I still haven’t bought a NextGen console. You’re probably thinking, “Why the hell should I believe anything this guy says when he’s not even in the current generation!” Totally fair, but to be honest, any game that people may come close to deeming a “system seller” isn’t going to be released until 2014.

Let’s play a game. Imagine I walk up to you, a typical 20-year-old college student, and introduce myself. Moving past the niceties of introductions you inquire what my interests are. “I’m a gamer,” I reply casually. How do you respond? Do you think of me as childish? The word “gamer” has acquired a vile connotation in most people’s vernacular nowadays. I hate being embarrassed to associate myself with my passion.

Franchise fatigue is usually thrown around among video game players like pizza among the hordes of drunken friends you invited down this past weekend. It’s natural for people to hunger for a new series after playing through the twelfth “Call of Duty.” I’m someone who abhors the concept, and have mostly given up hope for new intellectual properties in the AAA space. If you’re hungering for new experiences check out the indie space, it’s the video game Mecca of innovation right now.

Two warnings for those of you thinking about indulging in Laurel Halo’s Chance of Rain: Your brain will most likely hurt after listening to this masterpiece and lock the doors to your place of living because you may mysteriously end up on the roof once it’s all over.

Normally I try to examine some deep philosophical argument pertaining to the culture or state of video games as a whole in this column. But, I just watched the "Breaking Bad" finale and don't really have it in me to rhapsodize about my despair over the lap dance game in "Grand Theft Auto V." Instead, I'm going to try and brighten all your days by recommending some of my favorite video game music composers working right now.

Here’s a bit of fun trivia: Neill Blomkamp was once signed up to direct a film adaptation of the “Halo” series of video games alongside producer Peter Jackson. The funding for the project never really got off the ground (except for a mildly entertaining and well-filmed promotional short), and 20th Century Fox backed out before most of the filming had taken place.
