Daniel Kaplan’s recording name, Lord of the Fly, may initially illicit some unsavory connotations. First of foremost is William Golding’s vicious 1954 “Lord of the Flies”—and maybe, in the throes of his self-titled single, Kaplan’s yelp of “Lord of the what, bitches?/Lord of the Fly” indeed stresses a demand of hierarchal restructuring, of reallocation of dominance in a scene as fresh and fertile as an uninhabited island. Then, there’s the monster at the heart of Golding’s novel, the literal Lord of the Flies; Beelzebub, the devil himself. And maybe that’s an accurate depiction of Kaplan’s character—not the split mouthed pig on a stick of the book, but something closer to Milton’s romantic Satan: the deviant, the naysayer or the ardent artist, completely dedicated to his craft.

Parquet Courts took the punk scene by storm last year with Light Up Gold, an album that nailed the fundamentals of garage-rock. What separated Parquet Courts from the myriad of other punk bands was the subtle whiff of avant-garde noise that wafted from their headbob-inducing riffs.

A new era of college football is finally upon us. Last night, the selection committee handed down its rankings from on high. Now, instead of complaining between who’s No. 2 and No. 3 we can complain about who’s No. 4 and No. 5. In a way, there’s a new paradigm in college football and, in another way, nothing has changed a bit.

The Rural Alberta Advantage, rolling into their third album, are runners. They've left behind the towns that made them, driving for a nameless city. It's a city that's “cold, and cuts through [their] teeth,” but in its embrace, they'll do fine. They run from their rural namesake, someplace hinted at in the “Star Trek”-referencing enterprise “Vulcan, AB” and, once free of its grip, continue to run... and run...

The streets full of orange cones and cars blocking off entrances wasn’t for Madison’s never-ending construction this time, but instead to help set up for 10Fest, an event celebrating the Overture’s first ten years of existence. Typically overflowing in a sea of red towards Camp Randall, a large amount of Madison’s community was headed towards the Capitol this past Saturday. Downtown Madison was completely transformed, hosting a variety of events such as circus tents, aerial acrobatics, wagons, and many kid friendly activities.
