Many of us may not be familiar with Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser, the two New York City natives who make up Holy Ghost!, a synthpop duo with heavy disco and funk influences. The boys have been working together under various group names since the early 2000s and are now known for creating catchy ’70s and ’80s club tunes. The duo recently released their second album, Dynamics.

It’s been worth waiting three years for Factory Floor to release a new album. Their new self-titled album, Factory Floor, embodies a style we haven’t seen from the electronic trio. Known primarily for being a noise and post-punk band, their new record sets the tone of a futuristic disco with its retro drum machine kicks, distorted vocals and pulsating rhythms. Though repetitive, the album’s intensity amplifies with each track, making it an electrifying listen.

Anyone who eats ice cream, eggs, mango or sweet potato is getting some of their necessary intake of Vitamin A. Even pumpkin pie contains Vitamin A. Because Vitamin A is found in many different foods, either naturally or supplemented, the consequences of not having enough are rarely a topic of discussion.

What is afrobeat? Afrobeat is a style of music that comes from adding traditional instruments and styles with popular contemporary music. Though it’s not quite jazz and not quite funk, afrobeat includes strong elements of both along with a heavy dose of the shekere and other African instruments. But the best part of the genre isn’t just the crossroads of cultures, but rather the way it makes you feel. At its core, afrobeat music just makes you want to dance.

Flattered to hear Thursday that he would be performing at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s inaugural Revelry Music and Arts Festival May fourth, indie artist Toro y Moi was also a bit surprised: Before the announcement, he was unfamiliar with the school, Madison and Wisconsin as a whole.

While the weather was freezing the past few months, the Wisconsin men’s tennis team started off its season hot, going 10-2 in its first 12 meets. But last week, while many students ventured to warmer regions, it was the tennis team that went, not cold, but freezing, getting demolished in five meets.

Jam bands, the oft-maligned subcategory of rock bands which write cheesy lyrics and play never-ending songs, happen to be my favorite kind of music. The genre itself is hard to define, but pretty much any band that “jams” can be a jam band.

Tonight I write not as a journalist but simply as a Wisconsin fan, a Wisconsin fan still unable to comprehend what the Badgers have for a 2012-’13 team. After knocking off No. 2 Indiana Tuesday, it seemed as if the sky was the limit. Wisconsin was 4-0 in Big Ten play and in the midst of a seven-game winning streak with Iowa the final opponent on a three-game “road trip.” The Badgers were alone on top of the conference standings and poised to move into the national rankings—potentially into the top 15 or 20.

Victor Wooten exudes a spontaneous and natural presence to match both his musical philosophy and the low, vibing hum of his choice instrument, the bass. He brought both of these things to UW-Madison’s campus on Wednesday, Oct. 10, for a lecture at Union South and following concert at The Majestic Theatre.

Tame Impala is not Pink Floyd, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Zombies, or any other typical 60s psychedelic rock group. Unfortunately for them, this is their ill-fated future, as many first time listeners will come to relate them to these early pioneers due to Tame Impala’s characteristically influenced sound. Even lead vocalist Kevin Parker’s voice vaguely resembles that of Paul McCartney.

For the impatient out there, here’s a single sentence summation of Paralytic Stalks, of Montreal’s latest sonic think piece: The sound of Kevin Barnes, frequent musician and perpetual thespian, traveling so far up his own ass that he has finally emerged out the other end and into the brilliant light of day.

Quite paradoxically, Leonard Cohen is an ageless performer. With
a voice that has run from slight weariness to a decrepit husk, he
has followed his own path creatively. He was a poet and novelist
before he turned singer-songwriter, and his songs are peppered with
literary motifs and turns of phrase.
