His debut in 2011 delivered pop reflection on ourselves and the sensibility of meaningful music. Childish Gambino returns with funk and pushes the hip-hop limits. Screenwriter of the popular show “Atlanta,” Donald Glover proves himself to be an ever-evolving writer through his third album, “Awaken, My Love!”.

Although it was a Sunday, The Orpheum was as lively as ever Sunday night with indie rock group Band of Horses performing at the set. Gathering a crowd of all ages, the band packed in an extremely lively show, ending the weekend on an electrifying note.

A small, yet eager crowd gathered at The Frequency this past Wednesday for an evening of indie rock. Three acts, each with similar makeups, performed to a crowd of roughly 25 tame listeners. The Frequency, a fairly small venue, helped support an intimate atmosphere that was unfortunately never taken fully advantage of.

There isn’t a single genre of music that fully encapsulates the sound of both Chicago-based band Wild Belle and their opener James Supercave. On the first stop of their nationwide tour, the groups graced the visitors of The Sett with an energetic show. The venue was filled with college students and adults alike who began enjoying the show seated at the tables. By the end of the show, there wasn’t much room to even move around.

There’s no doubt that Caroline Smith has gone through a metamorphosis. There’s also no doubt that she’s never stopped being Caroline Smith.

Freakfest provides attendees with an insane variety of options in terms of music throughout the night. While packing yourself against the crowds at the top of State Street may allow you to see a big-name band, it’s the smaller stages that can invoke a stronger sense of community and connection with the performers. The Frances Street Stage, sandwiched between The Towers and Statesider, exuded such an atmosphere, with a wide swath of genres to hold over the more transient crowd.

Before I dive into a detailed breakdown of this weekend’s events at The Orpheum Theater, I’ll keep it short and offer this generalization: Man, oh man, the last few days were a great time to be a fan of dance music in Madison. The city’s jam junkies turned out Friday to see their revered heroes in Sound Tribe Sector 9 melt some faces and Saturday, it seemed, everyone in Madison came out for what has become something of a tradition in our city: Cherub’s yearly visit.

The chillwave label has been tossed around quite loosely as of late–any band adopting those whirly synths and cheeky basslines immediately becoming arbiters for a movement to prove the 80’s never truly died. The sudden surge characterized 2009, with founding fathers Washed Out, Toro y Moi and Neon Indian pioneering the psychedelic dance fever. Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo debuted Psychic Chasms as a lackadaisical trod through soundscapes, mutually original and retro. A song like “Deadbeat Summer” established his purposefully apathetic sound, humorously trapped within the virtual space-age dreams of previous generations. Palomo would revisit the sound on Era Extraña, but decidedly less cheerful day-tripping, and more apprehensive voyager with a heavy case of sea-sickness. Neon Indian returns with electrifying confidence on VEGA INTL. Night School, Palomo’s most well-rounded work yet.

It’s that time again to round up your friends and head to a concert put on by our talented and entertaining student a cappella group, the MadHatters. Many people may think of “Alice in Wonderland” when hearing the name and while they may not be insane, the Hatters have some tricks up those jacket sleeves.

Compton, Cal. rapper Kendrick Lamar exploded on the music scene with his misinterpreted hit single “Swimming Pools (Drank)” back in 2012. Since then Kendrick has been considered one of the best rappers to emerge into the mainstream in recent memory. Following the release of the controversial single “The Blacker the Berry,” Lamar has released a third album titled To Pimp a Butterfly.

On Wednesday, March 4, MisterWives stopped at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, on their Our Own House tour, with openers Handsome Ghost and BØRNS. I had never been to this concert venue before, but I immediately became accustomed to it and liked the intimacy and closeness that came across even though it was a fairly large stage.

Do you ever have one of those days where it feels as though all of your mistakes have caught up to you? You know those mornings when you wake up wishing you could take back that stupid thing you did last weekend, or thinking you should call your mom more often or contemplating an attempt to finish that calculus assignment that was due last week? Those mornings where it feels as though you wake up to a mountain of thoughts all disorderly jumbled inside your head? About two weeks ago, I had one of those mornings.

I have always maintained that, on many occasions, the love and enthusiasm of a well-unified fan base is every bit as important to a band’s live experience as the live show itself. Last Friday was one of those times. When Lotus stopped in Madison to kick off the second leg of their Gilded Age Tour, perhaps their most exciting headlining tour to date, the Orpheum Theatre was lucky to host some of the most enthusiastic fans of any music scene. Of course, that’s not to say the band didn’t do their part as well. Supported on the bill by Turbo Suit, Lotus hit the stage early and played two full sets laden with incredible musicianship and the extravagant light show that most fans have come to expect from the band.
