While 2005 may not be remembered for a new exciting trend or a
handful of absolutely classic releases, it was still a good year to
be a music fan. There was a glut of very solid albums, making the
difference between No. 6 and No. 26 as slim as any year in recent
memory. Any Top 15 list will have regrettable omissions. The fact
that perennial favorites like The White Stripes and Paul McCartney
and follow-up albums from Antony and the Johnsons and Franz
Ferdinand fell by the wayside is a testament to how many releases
were worth your time this year.

Released in 2000, the single 'What's Up, Fatlip'? addressed an
obvious question'what has the former Pharcyde MC been doing since
leaving the group after Labcabincalifornia's 1995 release. On that
track, Fatlip sorted through the wreckage of his career and
personal life over poppy piano beats. His excruciating
self-analysis cut against his delivery and the bright production,
creating a brilliant single that promised his future solo album
would be worth the wait.

Stevie Wonder's latest album, A Time to Love, is not the
comeback much of the music press has been trumpeting it as. But
when one takes into account the schmaltz Wonder has been releasing
for the past twenty years, and the consistent brilliance he
maintained throughout the entirety of the seventies, it is
understandable that people are getting excited about a Stevie
Wonder album that at least has some grit to it.

Sandy Koufax was scheduled to pitch game one of the 1965 World
Series against the Twins' Jim 'Mudcat' Grant, but he didn't end up
taking the mound that day. Instead, Don Drysdale was handed the
ball for the Los Angeles Dodgers. LA lost the game, but Koufax
would return to pitch three games in the next six days, winning two
complete-game shutouts and pitching the seventh game on two days
rest. The Dodgers won the series four games to three.

Though nobody knew it at the time-and too few know it now-Big
Star was one of the greatest groups of the '70s, yet remains the
least appreciated band whose influence can truly be considered
incalculable. They gave an indifferent public three albums that
prove nirvana can be reached at 45 rpm, and in the process, created
power pop-a mix of crunchy guitars and Beatle-esque pop-that Cheap
Trick and the Knack would later make money off of. Their influence
extends well into the contemporary indie rock scene, so much that
the existence of The Shins, Teenage Fanclub or The Posies would be
inconceivable without Big Star.

An anomaly occurred in Hollywood this summer when its
anticipated blockbusters failed to draw much of a crowd. Sure,
there were surprise hits involving amazing marching waterfowl and
extremely old virgins, but for every \March of the Penguins"" there
lurked a ""Honeymooners"" or ""High Tension."" Overall, summer box
office receipts dipped 9 percent from 2004's summer.

If downloads were equivalent to album sales, OK Go's sophomore
album, Oh No, would have already gone gold. The irreverent band's
homemade, unofficial video for lead single \A Million Ways"" has
earned the band the kind of attention that no publicist can
create.

It seems unbelievable now, but only a year and a half ago, Kanye
West was merely one of hip-hop's best and most wanted producers.
His breakthrough debut album The College Dropout changed all that,
turning the focus from Kanye the producer to Kanye the witty,
versatile emcee.

It is my third year at UW and up until a few days ago, I thought
I was aware of every restaurant located on campus and around the
downtown area. I was wrong. Marigold Kitchen, 118 S. Pickney St.,
has managed to miraculously escape my restaurant radar.

In all truth, many thought Odyssey would prove to be a
monumental failure, something akin to Weezer's self-destructive
follow up to Pinkerton, or Daft Punk's most recent offering.

of that for a moment.

From the outset of their career, Daft Punk had the uncanny
ability to attract a wide following from a rather specific genre.
Their club-oriented debut Homework became a party staple not only
for the club kids, but for music aficionados as well.

There are few things harder than breaking into the music scene.
For a band to make a name for itself, it takes talent, dedication
from all members and, perhaps most challenging of all, the creation
of a unique new sound.
