When I went out to get this story, I was hoping to uncover some kind of sports hierarchy, with football at the pinnacle and smaller sports like rowing and rugby forming the base of the pyramid, kind of like the sturdiest four cheerleaders of the squad—they perform just fine, but everyone knows the crowd’s eyes will be drawn to the top.

There is the echo of a snare drum rattling the speakers of someone in America that looks exactly like me. By looking like me, I mean a young Black man. There is a gas station somewhere in America that this someone will visit for fuel. Perhaps this someone has a friend or two with him. On its opening day, “Halo 4” earned $220 million globally, making it easy to see why gamers recognize Halo as one of the most beloved franchises in video game history. When the previous developers, Bungie, announced they would no longer be working with “Halo,” it left many fans of the franchise concerned for furture installations. Bungie ended its run with the franchise on “Halo Reach” and passed the torch to 343 Industries, effectively entrusting these new developers with Microsoft’s most valuable franchise. Not only did 343 bring new life to the series but they did it without spoiling the saga Bungie had already left behind.

Whether the coaching staff and players wanted to admit it or not, frustration within the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (1-3-2 WCHA, 5-3-2 overall) was—statistically speaking— at a program-high after being shutout in three straight games, spanning from the Minnesota-Duluth series through the opening game of the Bemidji State series.

Symbolism. God, that’s a big topic to cover. I mean, how do you even go about it? What’s the peppy, prepared angle on this topic? Without it dissolving into some kind of tract or tirade I mean. I do my best, week in and week out, to avoid either of those modes.

I had zero idea that I would end up in the middle of Dance Motherf*cker at Union South with Gabe Herrera spinning last May. He moved seamlessly between hip hop and electronic vibes and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the mix and pondering why I never came to DMF. Eventually, by my request, Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like” boomed menacingly in a room containing me and about 20 others. I leapt in some sort of graceless aggression with my friend Ian while watching the rest awkwardly performing a verbal tiptoe around the infamous N-word war-chant chorus.
