Parquet Courts burst onto the scene with their raucous 2013 release Light Up Gold. Their The Feelies and Television-inspired songs distilled the essence of punk and alternative through clever lyrics conveyed by a monotone slacker drawl over chaotic, messy and fierce power chords. Since that release, people have been waiting for the band to finally make its mainstream breakthrough. With their most recent album Human Performance on the legendary U.K. indie label Rough Trade, they are making their case for broad recognition, even though it seems that the band has lost something along the way.

On Thursday night, The Sett at Union South was unrecognizable. Masses of students with knit beanies, ripped jeans, worn converse and flannel shirts claimed the familiar college eatery for the night. Excitement increased in anticipation for the music that would soon overtake the room. Green wristbands were passed around, the tech assistants finished their wiring and girls in high-waisted pants and pigtails flocked to the stage as the lights dimmed. It was clear that the night was about to officially start.

Tuesday afternoon when the Badgers (3-15 Big Ten, 7-22 overall) fell 76-72 to the Northwestern Wildcats, the Wisconsin career for five seniors officially came to a close. It didn’t take much longer for head coach Bobbie Kelsey’s time in Madison to end as well, as the UW Athletic Department announced Friday Kelsey had been officially let go.

Kanye West’s long-gestating, and perhaps still unfinished The Life of Pablo is a beautiful, heartfelt mess. Yeezy is perhaps more aesthetically indulgent than ever, and the conduct is essentially disorderly throughout. Thematically, Ye believes this album to be an unbridled, honest outpouring in service to his followers, detractors and to god. To anyone with an objective bone in their body, maybe it’s best to just sit back and enjoy listening to an eminent madman produce big, novel sounds again.

After the Wisconsin Badgers’ (3-13 Big Ten , 7-19 overall) 90-65 blowout home loss to the Maryland Terrapins in early January, junior power forward Avyanna Young called junior Maryland center Brionna Jones, “probably the best player” she had ever defended after the Terrapins center tallied 22 points and nine rebounds on Young and UW’s frontcourt.

Mark Johnson, UW legend and head coach of the Wisconsin women’s hockey program (22-1-1 WCHA, 28-1-1 overall), will see a familiar face in Madison this weekend when John Harrington and his Minnesota State Mavericks (0-21-3 WCHA, 3-23-4 overall) visit LaBahn Arena. Both Johnson and Harrington played for team USA in the 1980 Olympics when the team infamously defeated the Soviet Union on their way to winning a gold medal.
