You're going to gain the Freshman 15'there's no getting around
it. But lest this evoke thoughts of flabby bellies, take a moment
and imagine the wonderful indulgences that will comprise those 15
pounds of collegiate gluttony.

Beginning fall 2006, a brand new Park Street residence hall will
provide some freshmen with an upscale dorm experience. Though Smith
Hall will represent a more luxurious housing option, it will not
alleviate the crunch on freshmen housing in the long run.

A circle roughly the size of a dorm room was dimly illuminated
from above. Darkness consumed everything else, selfishly hoarding
away whatever was beyond. A knee-high fog kept the floor from view.
Four figures stood equally spaced out along the perimeter of the
circle as I nervously glanced around from the center. When the
individuals shifted their stance from time to time, the fog twisted
and rolled, curling around and upwards, in a vain attempt to
conquer the light, before settling back down.

If executed perfectly, a farewell can be a beautiful thing. And
as sad as good-byes can be, there is something glamorous about
them. When we are forced to part, we think about what we are
parting with. Often, upon reflection, we are more grateful for what
we had and proceed with a degree of humility we should have carried
with us all along.

I'm graduating in two weeks. Leaving college behind forever, as
I have decided that at this point in my life, grad school seems
only slightly more appealing than being rubbed naked up and down a
gigantic cheese grater and thrown into a kiddie pool full of salt.
UW-Madison has been good to me and all, but I'm really looking
forward to going out into the real world and building a proper
grown-up life.

A circle roughly the size of a dorm room was dimly lit from
above. A darkness consumed everything else, keeping the rest of the
world out and the floor was hidden from view by a thick fog. Four
figures stood along the perimeter as I nervously glanced around
from the center of the light. When the individuals shifted their
stance from time to time, the fog twisted and rolled, curling
upwards, in a vain attempt to conquer the light.

The History Channel often airs shows retracing the steps of
historical personages. Jesus' route to Jerusalem. Alexander the
Great's conquering path through Asia. Lewis and Clark's trail to
the West Coast. I would like to submit a journey of my own to this
list, one that any UW-Madison student can recreate.

Many college students at one point or another have considered
doing something unconventional to earn money. Some sell their
football tickets, others sell their bodily fluids. Two enterprising
UW-Madison students have even opted to sell their forehead
space.

Since its launch in 2002, Facebook has become an indoctrinated
element of college social life and a way for students to chronicle
extracurricular activities that are not always congruent with
university policies or even the law.

Formerly a well spring of political activism, the Mifflin and
Bassett Street neighborhoods have settled down into adult,
residential neighborhoods as students have moved out and new
construction has begun in the historic area.
