Blasts from a sawed-off shotgun resounded in a parking lot near Witte Hall early Thursday morning, jolting residents awake and prompting University Police to rush to the scene.
According to Lt. Johnnie Diamante, police were called to Parking Lot 46, 301 N. Lake St., at 1:50 a.m. when one gunshot was reported. As police approached the scene, two more gunshots sounded.
Upon arrival, police arrested Zachary Hyde, who was charged with resisting an officer. Police do not believe he is connected with the case. Authorities later found and arrested Jason Hall, who was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. No motive has been established. Police found a sawed-off shotgun at the scene.
Police found one victim at the crime scene, a man who had been hit in the back of the head, possibly by the stock of the shotgun.
The shooting attracted the attention of students in Witte Hall, some of whom saw the aftermath of the shooting from their dorm windows.
I went to bed around two. I was laying in bed, almost fell asleep when I heard the shot go off, and right away it sounded like a gunshot so I jumped out of bed and ran over to the window,\ said UW-Madison freshman John Kolstad, who watched from the 10th floor of Witte Hall.
Kolstad said he saw a man run out of the parking structure, leave the gun in a clump of bushes outside and sprint through the Witte Hall backyard.
